Agios Neophytos Monastery in Paphos | Cyprus tourist sight

It is located 20 minutes drive to the north of Paphos and has an unusual history and architecture. The monastery was founded in 1159 by the monk Neophyte the Recluse.

From the age of 18, Neophyte was a novice of another monastery in the north of the island, where he aspired to become a hermit, but did not receive permission from the abbot for this, due to his young age. A few years later, when Neophyte was returning from a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, he went to the deserted mountains near Paphos, where he settled in a small cave.

For a long time, the monk manually carved a new space in the rock. As a result, he made a cell with a grave prepared for himself, and near the exit he placed an altar from a marble slab for worship. The cave is called Engleistra, which translates as a place of seclusion. After 10 years, other monks join the hermit and Neophyte's dwelling gradually grows into a small monastery. New cells and premises are cut down in the rock.

Among the sights, there also are frescoes painted on the walls of the cave during the life of Neophyte.

Nowadays, the monastery becomes especially crowded on September 28, when the day of St. Neophyte is celebrated.
