Honestly, i find the socket chisels more comfortable in the hand for pearing, and being removable, i find them more comfy to sharpen too.

I also like the balance better. The metal of the tang means those chisels have a different weight distribution vs. the socket chisels, which are all wood up top. I find I work better with the lower center of gravity on the socket ones.

We're free to be wrong here in the UK too, in fact we do it a lot ! But we don't see so many of the socket chisels over here so it's lead of a choice !

I would agree with you, but then we’d both be wrong

I feel like it isn't a huge concern if the handle for a tool that you strike down on can come off if you pull the handle up.

My main takeaway is that they rarely, if ever, have split handles. So I spend less time making new handles. I am also able to stuff any old dowel into the socket when one does break, and I'm not stopping for long on getting back to work since even a branch from a tree will work.

Pro tip: a squirt of hairspray will help keep the handle from falling out of the socket. I use Aquanet, just like my grandmother

I'm staring at one of the "make your own handle" Richters right now, and it's pretty short, lol.
Been that way since I got it. 😅

I like to put broom sticks into socket chisels. That's mainly because I'm into extreme chisling.

I wanted to tell you I used some pallet wood for a mini miter saw table I built, they weren’t level an I installed em anyways. An I sat outside for an hour planning it with a mini planer, was so satisfying

Before I bought chisels, I held Lie Neilsen, Veritas and Narex. The LNs felt perfect, but $$. I ended up getting Pfeil for a bit less $ and similar (to me) feel. I'll see if the handles last. Once the steel is good enough, the feel is more important IMO.

The thing is, you design a tool to not fail at a critical time. In the use case of a chisel, it's actually under stress when you hit it with a mallet. With the socket chisel, the same stress that it's under, reinforces the strength of the connection. The handle should only fall out when you're NOT actually using it to do it's task.

Nah, I am in Australia. So the shiny man is wrong.

LoL, I prefer sharp chisels and care little about much else involved. I've even used a bench chisel to (gasp) clean up a mortise!

Rex I love your humor man it takes a decently intelligent person to even understand that you're joking I love it keep them coming

Would it be practical to remove the handle and just hammer the chisel socket itself? Or would this risk damaging the chisel and/or mallet?
