I find it interesting how dark alternate history makes people patriotic for something they oppose irl. TNO makes americans wish to rebuild USSR or Russia to set things right, Fallout makes russians salute USA flag and promise to rebuild and so on. Not just HoI4, but main Fallout series too. Or Metro. Or Stalker. Or many other examples. Though usually post-apocalyptic...
It's a combination of familiarity and at the same time reevaluation of "good guy/bad guy" status on their own. Take something wrong and rebuild it in the idealistic view it once claimed, but this time true to it. Or die trying.
