I first saw this wonderful film c1957, when I was 16. I am now 83, and having just viewed it again, have only just realised that it became my life bible. I grew up rudderless, . without a father, but here was a manual for how to live a life - so many lessons to be learned and followed.

When I was growing up (the 1970s) this would have been seen to be amusingly dated, a period piece. Seeing it now, and the brilliance of the costumes and staging just blows your mind. It is just perfection!

Rodgers and Hammerstein's dark love story before film noir was even a word. Many believe the creation of the 1990 blockbuster "Ghost" was inspired by this musical. God bless whoever shared it to us for free!

Love this film... and nobody mentioned the dancer dancing on the beach with Luise. His name was Jacques D'Amboise, one of the best American ballet dancers discovered by Balanchine.
And Mr. Snow was an operatic tenor Robert Rounseville whom I have on a wonderful DVD of opera Tales of Hoffman where he was in a title role. He had a wonderful voice.

Both Richard Rodgers & Oscar Hammerstein said many times over the years that of all their shows, "Carousel" was their greatest & most favorite. Oscar even declared it to be so perfectly written, they would never change a single thing.
I happen to agree. It is their greatest, and most beautiful musical they wrote.

Watched for first time! ❤❤❤ Indeed, emotionally charged! I love carousels of old and the 1920s 1930s 1940 1950s --- let us make a time machine! Shirley Jones is now 90! President Regan had an memorable engraving put on Gordon Macrae's grave. Susan Luckey (daughter) of Billy Bifelow died at 74 in 2011. What a treasured movie! ❤

While I don't like the framing device they used for the story and some changes, I really really love this movie. The orchestrations are impeccable, wonderful performances, the opening Carousel Waltz scene, the Bench Scene, that ballet!!! wow, and I always get teary-eyed at the end. Thank you for posting this.

Another interesting piece of trivia connected to this movie is that the Broadway actress who portrayed Louise is a dancer in chorus numbers in the movie. She is the only Broadway cast member to appear in the film. Bambi Lynn. She was married to the choreographer, Rod Alexander, and no doubt assisted Susan Luckey in her interpretation of the role in the "psychological surrealist ballet" sequence (for which Broadway choreographer Agnes deMille demanded screen credit).
Bambi played the "dream Laurey" in OKLAHOMA! so in fact three cast members from that movie are reunited one year later in CAROUSEL. Again, I believe it to be the better movie of the two and MacRae's voice is a huge asset to both. I think Bambi is easy to spot in the June Is Bustin' Out All Over sequence, for which the pier at Boothbay had to be strengthened . I walked on that pier in 1981. It was gone by my next visit in 1986, as was the Cafe which I believe continued operating for some time.

A great cinematic adaptation of a brilliant and moving stage musical. Gordon MacRae replaced Frank Sinatra who walked off the production reportedly over the need to film everything twice, in 65mm and 35mm. But he struggled to record Soliloquy and MacRae's more operatic tenor voice is better suited to the score. He gives his best screen performance and won a Laurel award for this and OKLAHOMA! in 1956.
Time magazine critics voted the play this is based on as the Musical of the Century in 2000. Some complain about the flashback framing device which was not in the play, but this is a common narrative technique of cinema and I think it works well here. It's the penultimate film role of Gene Lockhart, June's father. Shot on location in beautiful Boothbay Harbour, Maine and Zuma beach, LA.
Ferenc Molnar, who wrote LILIOM, the tragedy this was based on, wouldn't allow Puccini or Gershwin to adapt it into an opera, but expressed interest re R&H doing so after the success of OKLAHOMA! on Broadway and at a final dress rehearsal told Rodgers and Hammerstein that they had done a beautiful job and that his favourite part was their new ending. High praise indeed. Sadly, he never saw the movie, which was very popular in Australian cinemas. Unusual for a musical, it has a hero who is hard to like much of the way through and who has emotional problems. An anti-hero. However, the song he sings about impending fatherhood reveals why Julie loves him and he is humbled by the depth of her love for him in the final part of the show and changes. A musical fantasy which deals with serious issues. A unique achievement and timeless in its ability to entertain and move audiences. Unfairly ignored at the 1956 Oscars. Fox promoted the more popular musical THE KING AND I, also a great film adaptation of a stage show. However, Henry King was a finalist at the Director's Guild Awards for this movie and it was a nominee for the Best Written Musical at the Writer's Guild Awards (losing to THE KING AND I). In truth, CAROUSEL is the better show and film, with cinematography on locations which set it apart from most of the musical films of its era and characters with unusual depth, well portrayed by a perfect cast, in my opinion. P. S. See my reply below to the person who jokingly brings up the final sunset shot. By the way, the graduation scene was shot on the lawn in front of Fox's Southern mansion set used in many films inc THE LONG, HOT SUMMER & HUSH, HUSH, SWEET CHARLOTTE. One of the girls graduating with Louise, possibly the one next to her, became the first wife of Richard Zanuck, Darryl F's son who rescued Fox in 1964 from bankruptcy by greenlighting another R&H musical, THE SOUND OF MUSIC.

My favorite musical of them all. Have many issues with the movie, not least the excessive cuts to the score, and yet, unassailable.
