Did you know? In fact Horowitz enjoyed listening to numerous operas and was a passionate lover of their piano transcriptions. During his time at the conservatory, he was even criticized for his excessive preference for these arrangements. There also is a scene in a 1970's TV interview where he freely playing a verse from Kalman's operetta.
He enjoyed playing these songs in private, but he never performed to the public or recorded them during his lifetime. Recorded just four days before his death, this Wagner opera is very unusual and offers a glimpse into the wide-ranging love he had for operas throughout his life.

The fact that this is recorded just days before his death is…too heavy😭

Horowitz's swan song, his goodbye to the world. The playing here is truly amazing, full of love, and for me, perhaps his best playing. It's interesting to juxtapose this superb playing with it being recorded in his final days. Thanks for posting with the sheet music synced to the audio!

I always thought it was almost impossible to play this on the piano, the tone of the voice is simlply too beautiful to replicate it on the piano, but here comes horowitz proving me wrong, thanks for the upload i didn't know about it :)

In my view the best recording of this piece out there and don't forget it comes from the last CD Horowitz made before his death. He was in his upper 80's when he made The nuances and subtitles are way beyond what anyone else has done with this piece. This was the Master in top form showing all the experiences of a life time of playing!!
