Doomsday Clock Moves to 90 Seconds to Midnight

On Tuesday, the Science and Security Board of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists moved the hands of the Doomsday Clock forward, largely (though not exclusively) because of the mounting dangers of the war in Ukraine. The Clock now stands at 90 seconds to midnight—the closest to global catastrophe it has ever been.

Something like this is hard for most people to take seriously because no nuclear weapon has been used in anger in their lifetime. Everyone knows about Hiroshima and Nagasaki and probably the nuclear arms race, but this is ancient history to most people.

Personally, I've rarely seen the world in such a volatile place as it is today. It's not just the wars. It's the financial vulnerability, the deep indebtedness, the radical politics (on all sides), the degradation of our culture (worldwide), and the rampant corruption.

90 seconds to midnight is not an exaggeration, in my opinion.
