My favorite Irish history book is "Ireland Her Own" by Socialist TA Jackson that was published back in the sixties and had had to be published in the then East Germany as most books at the time were being published by British Publishers. Jackson does a great job of linking the generational struggles of the Elizabethian period, the famine. and the land wars to ireland's contemporary issues. He diverges from the usual boring chronological listing of names and events and employs a colorful, rousing, technique more often found in novels making it a book that's hard o put down.

For Tom Barry, whose book I've read, I have tremendous respect and great admiration. I'm a lot more reserved when it comes to Dan Breen with his anti-democratic sentiments and his outspoken sympathy for fascism. Regarding the establishment of the Free State (and later the Republic of Ireland) he expressed his disappointment and stated that he did fight for freedom but not for democracy. So while I don't want to belittle his military achievements (and how could I?), those views of his do definitely cool my enthusiasm for the man by some degree.

You should check out Edward Hartepole Lecky, Ireland in the 18th century, it is probably the most informative history surrounding the 1798 rebellion, part three being a must read to understand the time period but surpasses any Irish history book of the time.

I've a crazy story about Dan Breen regarding my grandfathers family home. The IRA used my granfathers home as a safe house during the war of independence in Templederry Co. Tipp with even Dan Breen using it several times.
