Brexit Austerity Hitting Devolved Governments

Boris Johnson promised that he would at least match the EU funding in the UK after brexit. So far, he hasn't produced any funding at all, and even the government's promises amounts to a much smaller pot of money than we used to get from the EU. The Welsh government has recently highlighted the problems that will reintroduce another wave of austerity due to this.

I live in Sweden the attitude to economic is different. First of all the unemployed are not assumed to be scroungers, so social benefits are relatively high, this stimulates the economy since the benefits are spent on food and other essentials. Government contracts are allocated to Swedish companies, not to the cheapest company, there is no race to the bottom. The result less social problems there is no underclass and more innovation, people are willing to start companies.

If British voters are anything like American voters, this won’t matter at all. They will rationalize getting less, or nothing, by saying, “at least whomever I don’t like isn’t getting any of MY money”. It’s the politics of spite.

EU funding is based on economic need; Tory funding is based on Party need. Bad luck if you voted for Brexit in a non-Tory area.

EU allocate funds on the basis of deprivation and levelling up economic development between areas. Tories allocate money on the basis of how many votes will it buy. Anyone asking the question why the UK has a significant number of areas identified by the EU as deprived and therefore needing funds. Not Boris I'm sure.

Speaking for Wales EU regional funding has been incredibly significant over so many years and contributed so much for deprived areas. The loss of this money will be grievous and I hope that the devolved govt never cease to make this point. The Welsh people who voted leave need their noses rubbed in it. Combine this loss with ever harsher austerity and Wales - a poor country - is about to get a LOT poorer.

One of the big arguments for Brexit was, we send all this money to the EU with no say in where it’s spent. Once we leave the EU we can choose where we spend it. Over the years I heard this argument mindlessly regurgitated by Brexiters. I thought what shmuck is going to fall for that? The Tories will never match EU spending, it’s not in their DNA.
