In the case of Morgan Le Fay, it is good to remember that the Arthurian Legends were not written by a single person. With it being a collaborative fiction written by many different authors. With each contributing a portion to the legend

It is possible some of the authors of Arthurian Legend may have been basing Morgan Le Fay on The Goddess Morrigan--while others were not doing this

I really liked this. I was unaware of the material/studies as it has been 20 years since i worked with it. For me the celtic cultures which spread around western Europe during the pre-roman era leaving simmilar pantheons behind them which were adopted into Roman/Christian religions. As Ireland was the last of the "pure" Celt pantheons before the Christian conversion, and being only a few hundred years before the Arthurian oral traditions began the back flow of tradition into france in the early 1100's would fit. Thank you again for some solid information.

I loved this!

Your face during that long pause in the middle made me LOL. The Morrighan is quite an interesting deity, a very liminal being due to how she exists just outside expectations of others and never quite lets you nail her down. Sometimes I wonder how she and, say, Hecate would get along.

Also, I love the "page turning" sound effect that comes up when you show sources in-video. And thanks for the note at the end about us practitioners! It helps to know someone sees we can contribute to the ongoing conversation and body of knowledge re: magic and religious practices.

I fail to see any link between Morgan and The Morrigan - the names look similar to those with English as their first language, but Morrigan is from the Irish for Great Queen and Morgan from the Welsh for Sea-born. English speakers ignoring the original source language need to remember that these stories began in different languages, and in the phonetics of their original languages, they sound quite distinct. In terms of the myths, the Morrigan was a Goddess of Battle and Morgan a literary creation of Geoffrey of Monmouth, who depicted her as a Priestess of Avalon and a healer. It IS possible that he drew on various myths in his inspiration for her, though hard to prove, and he is much more likely to have been inspired by Welsh than Irish myth. Later authors turned Morgan into a much less sympathetic characters, maybe cos she was more interesting that way or maybe the inherent misogyny of the period. If we remember that Welsh and Irish cultures and myths are distinct, rather than some mismash called "celtic", and that both Wales and Ireland have their own languages so the superficial apparent similarity of the names in English is meaningless, the connection between the two characters falls apart.

I am actively running a Home Brew DnD campaign that is based in the Harry Potter world. One of the plot lines leads to Arther and Morgan as they exist in the lore. This has helped me line a few things up. I thank you for your work.

This is a classic Dr Angela Symposium YouTube video!! The Morrigan is complex to say the least! Very fascinated for sure.

Morrigan and Morgana have been some of my favorite figures in folklore and Arthurian legend. I never saw her as evil, I feel that the only reason she was presented this way is because of the medieval outlook of women, especially women with power.

Yet again, a splendid analysis with supporting sources :bows:. Fascinating and enlightening.

EDIT: I loved your ending summation and comments. For many who walk the spiritual paths do so with a mythos of their own weaving as to do so is part of the process of their developing beliefs and practises. I count myself amongst their number I think, for my spiritual underpinnings come from my twining together the pastoral, nurturing, side of nature in the form of Silvanus and the wilder, less structured, forest dwelling, spirit of Mielikki.
