I think you're mixing between load balancers and API gateways,
Load balancer distributes network traffic across multiple identical servers, while the API gateway works as the interface of our microservices,
In the microservices architecture, we definitely need an API gateway, but we don't always need a load balancer, only if we want to scale our API horizontally.
