I love the idea that Data spontaneously manifested the emotion of disgust just for Barclay.

Barclay's acting activated a previously unknown emotion algorithm in Data's programming.

Data being so confused and digusted by how poorly barkley did his performance and then asking riker why everyone is clapping is so funny to me, he shows hints of becoming emotional throughout the series because of it still being a potential but probably would of taken a lot longer than he wanted

Data: "I... I hate this!"
Barclay: "More?!"
Data: "Please!"

Data doesn’t have emotions until he sees barclay’s acting lmao

The best part is data’s usual obliviousness for how tedious his performances can be for the crew (looking at you ODE TO SPOT) thinking he’s got something decent and then watching Barclay he’s just like damn this bad. Data is like one positron pathway away from the thought of “is this what I put them through when I read my poetry?”

What I love is that this shows what a good actor the guy playing Barclay is. You have to be good to act mediocre convincingly. Dwight Shultz isn't playing Cyrano, he's playing Barclay, playing Cyrano. Just something that delights me about the character overall.

When you really think about it, how weird is it that occasionally someone on board a Starfleet vessel would put on a skit or play a musical instrument for the senior officers and their friends? Barclay as Cyrano, Data as Scrooge, and Harry Kim with his clarinet.

That's so funny, I always thought of when "The Dude" watches his landlord's abstract theater in 'The Big Lewowski' . I have never considered "Spaced" but I will now :D

I love that you kept my favorite part of that clip. I still quote, “It’s not finished…. It’s finished” all these years later.

Any spaced references from non brits deserves a serious round of applause 😂👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

Apparently Data's emotions are limited to theater criticism.

Oh man the Spaced reference, too good

You have to wonder why Barclay wasn't let go by Starfleet long ago. In many episodes they tell how Starfleet has all these rigorous psychological tests to weed out people with problems. With Barclay's lack of self confidence, all his fears, etc. There's no way he would have passed.

Hahahahaha "because it's polite"!

Barclay must be the only character in Trek who's hair gets thicker as his time in starfleet goes on.

Picard and Data used to be my favorite characters growing up, Picard with his wisdom and loyalty and courage. Data with his search for knowledge and understanding of what it is to be human.
Now it's Riker, because I realize all along he didn't give a rats ass about the niceties even though he was a high ranking starfleet officer.
