There's a really funny story about the fate of "When a Man Loves a Woman."

I loved Percy Sledge as a kid. I knew the song really well and it was good for my range vocally. But when I delivered my recording to the label, a top executive there said "I heard the new album 'Time Love and Tenderness' and I think it's fantastic, it’s going to be huge, but you have to take "When a Man Loves a Woman" off the album.

I doubted myself for a moment but then pushed back and insisted the song stay on the record. It wound up becoming the second single and it went to #1 for 6 weeks. And I won a Grammy for it, best male vocal performance.

It's an incredible experience having 60 plus symphony orchestra musicians playing these beautiful arrangements of some of my favorite songs. It brings so much more dimension to songs I've recorded, some I've written, a lot of them hits of mine but that I've been performing all around the world for about 35 years. Now I get to experience the width and breadth of the emotional content of the songs, transformed through this amazing group of arrangements that is this symphonic orchestra album. It’s truly a dream come true for me.

The album, A Symphony of Hits, which includes When A Man Loves A Woman, debuted number #1 on the Billboard Classical Album Chart in 2019.
