Dont even waste time with the yeast and brown sugar, just get several beets from the grocery store and blend them up in the blender and add the beet to the water in the black bucket along with some dawn, the beets contain a compound called Geosmin that is used by researchers to trap mosquitos, its found naturally in the soil and comes up in an aeroso form when it rains and that attracts the mosquitos, the mosquito larvae die in the bucket because the dawn prevents them from leaving when they mature. I use beet peels in my bug zapper and that attracts hundreds of thousands of mosquitos and stops the cycle after they die and the larvae die in the bucket. I'm going on two years now since I first used the beets and the mosquito population is still down to virtually nothing and last season had some record rain.

I appreciate that there's someone else who despises mosquitos and will try a bunch to get rid of them.

We have a stock watering tank and to keep those pesky mosquitos from breeding in it we keep a couple goldfish in it. Been working good for 30 years. We also provide nesting perches in our loafing shed for barn swallows. It is fun to watch them in the evening as they dart and dive while hunting insects.

The smart mosquitos taking over the world rant was hysterical.

If you have any standing water - water butts, bird baths, etc, drop pieces of copper pipe or pennies into the water. The copper kills the larvae.

Used this inside of my apartment and within 2 days, mosquitoes were all but gone. It was worth the bit of smell. I also started using coils to keep new ones out at windows and entranceway. Will use this technique again towards the end of summer! Thanks!

You made me laugh with the smart mosquitoes - though it does feel like they have taken over the universe in the height of the humid SC summer. 😂 Thanks, Jag, I will be using all these viewer tips.

It’s really important for us to do this now, at the start of mosquito season. I shudder to think how many new mosquitoes just *one* female can make; every one we can eliminate now means many fewer later.

Thank you for sharing!

You’ve only made one error in judgment. Mosquitoes don’t go to outer space. They are from outer space.

Jag, I am a mosquito aphrodisiac. They are the deadliest predator of humans. I thank you for your experimentation and helpful information for ridding my yard of mosquitoes. 😊

it's great because the thing I hate about gardening and being outside the most is the mosquito bites! Definitely will try this!

There is a product made of only garlic called Mosquito Barrier or Garlic Barrier. You mix with water in a sprayer or spray bottle and it smells like garlic bread for an hour but that fades and no mosquitoes! They are repelled by the allicin in the garlic. You have to reapply after every rain.

My bird bath gets fresh water daily, just in case larvae were left overnight. A few years ago I added a solar fountain thinking they would not lay their eggs in moving water, but they come out when the sun goes down. So, changing the water daily is a must.

Also, I walk around my property and make sure anything containing even an inch of water gets dumped or covered. I will try this solution because with all the rain we've been getting, occasionally things get missed and they are out of control right now. Thanks!

for really stingy catchers out there, i use a dark pail/container which I fill with water which I use to water a few plants. Once I see multiple larvae, that is the only time I completely drain the container to water the plants.. while it is not an mosquito but a larvae killer, their reproduction is reduced.

Thanks so much for the info! Will use it! This also may help a bit also. Put a snug clear bucket in the black bucket so you can just pull it out to see them in the water. Use a strainer to see how many you got. The soap also is a nuro- poison so it dissolves their soft tissue as well as clogs their breathing ports.

This looks hopeful. Living in Tennessee.
I'm convinced the state bird is the mosquito. 😂

I have a tip for gnats that swarm your face.
Put on a hat and put something tall in it. The annoying pests actually go to the top of the target (you are the target), and thus will stay clear of your face.
I know it sounds stupid, but I tested it in my pasture. It worked. I was stunned.
For black flies (biting fly that is bigger than a gnat, and smaller than a housefly) spread a product called “Save the Baby” wherever your clothing ends…collars, wrist, sleeves…as well as around your hairline. They like those protected margins. The product is similar to Vicks vapor rub, but works better. I don’t know why. I tested this in upstate NY and Virginia. It works.
