Roller Coaster Restraints: Explained

On every roller coaster you'll always find a restraint; the thing that keeps you inside of the train, rather than out of it. Today, restraints come in a huge range of shapes and sizes, each using different methods to keep guests secure. In this video, we explore how roller coaster restraints have evolved over time, leading to the extremely comfortable lap bar restraints we see today; as well as understand how restraints work by exploring the two main industry types, ratchet restraints and hydraulic restraints.

Omg when he said that the ride cant start unless every harness is locked that made me feel so much better since I have a fear of my seatbelt not being locked during a ride

Two types of people on leg restraints:
1. I'm paranoid that I might fall out.
2. I like that I might fall out.

I must be one of the few people who loves being locked in ride restraints! I really like the feeling of being tightly locked in over the shoulder restraints, knowing they're protecting me and there's absolutely nothing I can do to escape them.

Love the waist restraints, nothing beats the feeling of almost flying out of the train

I associate lap bars with a chill, sort of "feel like I'm flying, wind in my hair" experience. Shoulder restraints are more like "this ride is going to be intense, mentally and physically prepare yourself." I love both! Completely different experiences but both equally enjoyable.

Thanks for the detailed explanations about the restraints. I was not aware of the redundancy factor, so that was good to hear. I always wondered if there was some kind of a fail-safe for the restraints in case they malfunction. It’s nice to know that there is. My biggest fear when riding roller coasters is that the restraints will somehow fail and come open during the ride. This video was reassuring!

You see, I LOVE over shoulder restraints. It makes me feel safe, I can pin my head to the back corner and no matter how scary the ride is, I just feel safe.

The lap ones make me feel like I’ll fall out when going down. So I end up pushing it down to make sure but then regret it immediately bc it hurts baaaad

Gonna be honest. I'm one of those guests that feels safer when the system uses both a restraint system and seat belt system XD

I always get so much anxiety, when the seat doesn’t unlock at the end, or lock in the beginning ahhh, love them so much tho

I love shoulder restraints because they make me feel secure and I like the metal handles that I can hold on to.

I really like the extra seat belt that gets connected to the over the shoulder harness.

I a skinny small person, usually have my legs feel like they’re being cut off with lap bars if they’re too tight or feel like I’m gonna fall out if they’re too loose, so I always prefer over shoulder ones
