They used 5 different rats. All but one was fine. It’s true they don’t drown, but the one that did suffer was so distressed it had a cardiac arrest. James Cameron used chest compressions to bring it back and kept it as a pet for a full year.

“A little bit of anxiety”. Understatement of the century

The problem with doing this in humans is actually the removal of the fluid afterwards. Even if a tiny bit is left in the lungs it will cause pneumonia and other lung complications.

My 6 mo old daughter participated in a multicenter, randomized, controlled study of the safety and efficiency of partial liquid ventilation (PLV) with AF0141 (Sterile Perflubron) in children with acute lung injury back in 1997. She was on a ventilator and she already had a trach tube, which actually helped with the administration of the Perflubron. As far as I’m concerned, it saved her life! I do not believe we would’ve walked out of the hospital with her had she not been selected to be one of the participants in the study. Sadly, from what I understand, the study with children was discontinued because they could not clearly answer any questions concerning their personal involvement.
I, however, asked lots of questions during the five days of watching nurses take some out of her lungs and then put some back in, flip her this way, then flip her that way. She was given a drug which completely immobilized her. And, of course, at six months old, she had no way of communicating anything at all about her experience.
It had no surface tension. A small squirt of the stuff was put in the palm of my hand. It was warm and immediately completely absorbed into my hand. For at least 5-6 years after the study whenever she had x-rays done, traces of Perflubron presented itself as bright white spots in her lungs. It was always fun watching the x-ray technicians scratch their head trying to figure out what the heck was going on with this kid’s lungs!

I saw the film on opening day, before my work shift started.
First thing I did upon arrival at my job was get on the phone to 20th Century-Fox and ask if the film's production office was still open.
They transferred me, and a nice woman answered.
"Hi, I just saw the film, and that scene with the rat breathing the fluid looked too realistic to be a special effect..."
"You've got a good eye! Yep, that was the real deal!"

This scene is why PETA didn't give their certification that no animals were harmed during the making of this film.

This was such an icon scene that I'm coming back to it about 20 years later as an adult and remember it so vividly. This was just some movie I watched with my parents on the Sci-Fi channel growing up but this scene stuck with me.

Maybe I dreamt it, but I remember learning about liquid breathing from some nighttime show (maybe Inside Edition?) in the late 90s, early 2000s. I remember some story about a very young girl who had to have some kind of lung surgery or transplant done - and they used the liquid to help her survive. They used a clip of a lab mouse being immersed in a vat of the liquid just like this clip. I never forgot it; but I’m surprised that 20 years later we don’t hear more about it in the medical field...

This was actually real. The actors breathing it were obviously fake, but this wasn't a camera trick or editing, the rat actually breathed the oxygenated fluorocarbon liquid

This scene is why the UK blu ray release was cancelled but we can watch Michael Biehn implode in the same film so that's all good

The breathing it in and expelling it out sounds like it would be the most painful experience a person can imagine.

That liquid even though it does contain oxygen, is MUCH more dense than the air. Typical lungs diaphragms are not able to displace so dense liquids for much time. You will feel tired of breathing very soon. Not to mention the lung infection afterwards.

Fun Fact: That rat was filmed in real time breathing fluorocarbon liquid.

Little known fact: they used real actors for this scene. If you look closely you can see

Cameron's 1989 movie Abyss shown rats breathing "oxygenated fluorocarbon fluid" for real. The human actor was not so lucky (he had to hold his breath).

The UK banned this movie's 4K release because of this scene. Animap cruelty laws wont allow it.
