Finally, a "how to" that doesn't go on for 20 minutes with half of that telling people you've been to grandma's. Thanks for the short and helpful mention, I knew it was random but nice to know that outbreaks -potentially- make it longer between distortions

When I was around level 20 or soo, I was alwayssss getting these, now I am level 40 and I literally can not get one to spawn.

Kind of infuriating that my progress has been stopped by needing to wait an undetermined amount of time waiting for these to spawn so I can get a total of 5 pokemon to complete the game. Hope this gets changed or they make it less time consuming

I have a theory on how the game spawns distortions.
My hypothesis is that every 10 or so minutes, the game performs a check on the area around the player for eligible distortion spots, and to make sure something like a Mass Outbreak isn’t already taking up the spot. After the check, it then rolls to see if a distortion will spawn. If it does, it appears. If not, another roll will happen 10 minutes later.
This would explain why being in the middle of the map seems to cause them to appear more frequently, as it generally puts you near more eligible spawnpoints for the distortion.

Not gonna lie. I have tried a 20-30 minute cycle of this for days now.
I'm post game, needing Cranidos and Shieldon, and need these to spawn, still.
But nothing...
Do cycles of this over and over, trying different things within the timeframe, and nothing seems to trigger the event from occurring.

I've been trying to spawn distortions for a couple hours and there are special spawns (trying to keep this spoiler free) in these locations due to the request I'm on. I think the special spawns are also overridding the distortions. Now that I've caught the pokemon for this area, let's see if they finally spawn.

Outbreaks don't affect the Space-Time Distortions. I went into Obsidian Fieldlands with a Starly outbreak. About 15 minutes later, after catching the Starly from the outbreak, the Distortion appeared. I actually think that they appear when you have a high number of unreported caught Pokémon.

This is complete speculation but I’m pretty sure if you are actively doing something that pauses the surrounding game ie battling, looking at Pokédex/map and possibly switching times either pauses or resets the timer. I’ve gone hours without spawns only when I was actively catching Pokémon or trying the complete the dex, and any time I did nothing that required pausing the game, such as feeding mons for entries, I would get distortions to spawn. Once again, complete speculation.

For whatever reason ever since I beat the postgame I have not had a single one spawn in any region. It feels as if it is bugged I have yet to even see one in the Icelands at all and I've put over 61 hours into the game.

As i was watching this i had veen standing still at the camp, and when you said stand in the middle of the map, i moved and the right away a distortion spawned

Thank you for this! I used this method twice and both times it took about 10-15 minutes. Also not sure if this helps but I accidentally pressed the ride button during it but it didn’t seem to change anything so I dont think you need to go completely afk.

I was doing my own tests to get these to spawn (I needed the fossil pkm) and I came up with the same conclusions. Still hoping there is some data miners that can confirm that waiting wastes the least amount of time if you are really only looking for the distortions
