I did a report on this!
The songs on this demo were performed by Brad Delp, Tom Scholz, and Jim Masdea on drums. When they finally got a record deal, the label wanted the album to be 'exactly like the demos', because they were so good. Tom was a perfectionist and also had invented a good chunk of the audio equipment he used (including the 'hyperspace pedal' which made the space sounds on the pick drags), and knew he had to do it in his basement again if it was to be done right. The label tried to make the band record in LA in a real studio, but producer on the project John Boylan was on Tom's side and ran interference with the label while Tom secretly went back to Boston to record the vast majority of the tracks by himself in his basement. While he was there, a 'decoy band' in LA (Barry Goudreau, Fran Sheehan, Brad Delp, Sib Hashian) recorded Let Me Take You Home Tonight, sort of as a way to prove they were actually recording in LA, and you can tell that song sounds a little different from the rest of the album. When Tom was ready, Boylan sent a remote truck to his house and ran a snake through the basement window to extract his tracks. Tom's basement was so tight that he could not have the organ and drums set up at the same time.
Another fun fact is that the acoustic guitar in More Than A Feeling was recorded on Delp's $100 Yamaha 12 string from a department store, and the entire production cost of the album was only $2000.
This story is not too well known but I honestly feel like it could be made into a movie.

Would also love to see a what makes this song great on Peace of Mind! :)

Brad Delp's voice was amazing and I can't imagine will ever be matched again, in its strength, range, and pitch. What an amazing vocalist! RIP Brad.

A lot people talk about “overplayed” songs. The genius of this album is that when any of these songs come on, I never skip- always listen to the end. They just never get old.

I met Brad as he was eating lunch up in Chicago. He invited me to sit with him and we had a great talk for around 20 minutes. Such a nice guy. Me, being a singer and musician he’s one of top vocal heroes. 🙏

Greatest debut of all time. Monumental in its significance, from the songwriting, arranging, technology, and overall production. A true American masterpiece!

one of my favorite albums of all time. Very sad for me I was living in Atkinson NH just down the street from Brad when he died and i did not even realize it. When i saw a pic of him i realized he use to jog down my street. I can only imagine how many times i was mowing the lawn listening to Boston singing outload of course and Brad ran by. HAHA I was a kid when this album came out and my dad would listen every day made me love it as well. I am 51 now and still love it!

I grew up in a poor and difficult household. Hitch a Ride was my inspiration to escape when I turned old enough. Then I did, and my life has never been the same, and I’ve not looked back. This band and those songs saved me.

One of the greatest rock albums of all time, let alone one of the best debut albums to this day. "More than a feeling" is among the greatest rock songs ever. Scholtz is arguably a genius but there would not have been a Boston without the incredible Brad Delp, RIP. Thank you, Rick, for continuing to shine a light on this amazing group.

What is so mind boggling is that Tom plays most of the instruments and all at the highest levels around! We need to talk about how he says he taught himself to play guitar and bass, are you serious! Plus he's an OUTSTANDING keyboardist too, talent out the *ss! Then he produces/records this and plays most of this in his basement by himself, has to be the most talented guy around overall. Then to top it off he writes most of the songs and used self-designed pedals to create the desired guitar sounds too, come on! Man is a frickin certified genius, unreal!!! Rick, I'm so glad you appreciate how great this is and I LOVE your breakdowns they're so detailed and insightful!

One of the greatest albums of all time. Brad had the “voice” behind Boston. Tom is a genius !!! In ‘76 Kansas would release Leftoverture and put Steve Walsh into the same category. Those two guys were the voice of radio.

I also was 15 yrs old in 75 and purchased this album and sat in my parents living room listening to this over and over again on our console RCA stereo. Every song was excellent. Boston, Peter Frampton, Eagles, Steve Miller Band, Fleetwood Mac and others in the 70’s playing on the radio and on cassette which was something new to some of us.

I'm convinced you could take that demo version of More Than A Feeling (mixed in a studio properly) and release it today and it would be a hit. Just such a timeless sound. My father was a HUGE Boston fan and having grown up in the 70's I was listening to this via him constantly. I will never not smile and think of him when I hear Boston. RIP old man, I miss you.

Separate the art from the artist. No matter what you may think of Schoiz as a businessman or a personality, you cannot deny he is a GENERATIONAL musical talent. And Brad Delp could easily be considered the greatest rock singer of all time. This is a demonstration of a partnership every bit as epic as Lennon and McCartney. Just amazing. Thank you for sharing, Mr. Beato.
