Arctic Circle is the largest network of international dialogue and cooperation on the future of the Arctic. It is an open democratic platform with participation from governments, organisations, corporations, universities, think-tanks, environmental associations, indigenous communities, concerned citizens, and others interested in the development of the Arctic and its consequences for the future of the globe. It is a nonprofit and nonpartisan organisation.

Dr. Leslie Field makes a compelling case for protecting and restoring arctic sea ice on an urgent basis, while humanity simultaneously carries on the important work of decarbonizing our economy and drawing down carbon from the atmosphere and the oceans. Thank you for your leadership!

Some new ideas on protecting Arctic ice;
a) Arctic Ice Pack; Arctic sea ice melt water ponds that are above sea level; drill & drain them. Hovercrafts with a range of sizes would access those ponds & reduce melting rates.
b) Arctic sea ice extent; PRASIS; Pontoon Restricting Arctic Sea Ice System. PRASIS is a system of resilient & reflective pontoons designed to be deployed in the Arctic to maximize sea ice. The pontoons can interlock and link together, each unit being 25m long, to create floating sea walls. The pontoons may be made from a reinforced reflective material covered (above water) with thin aluminium foil. The ice growth is helped by calmer water. Units hauled around the Arctic by Arktika class ships. The individual units can disconnect in times / places when wave stress, ice berg force, etc would overcome the binding strength of the joints. Big hexagon rings would create ice islands that would melt slower. Binding pontoons side by side would create a stronger platform for rough seas. Free floating pontoons would dodge ice bergs. Binding joints need fail redundancy, so if one unit is, damaged, deformed or sinking, it automatically disconnects from adjacent units. The company Marinetek makes strong pontoons. The pontoons would help in the Fram Strait to minimize the multi-year sea ice loss from export.
c) Greenland; cover melt ponds with GRASS. Glassy Reflective Arctic Shiny Spheres. Imagine glass spheres the size of a base ball. Get dumped into Greenland melt ponds before moulins form. Enough GRASS balls would make the melt pond surface reflective & cool enough to freeze over in summer. Glass is a good material for mass production as there's no shortage of sand & it can be heated with thermal solar power. The glass balls would need to have the right thickness; light enough to float, strong enough to endure the summer, & minimize sharp fragments in the decay cycle.
d) Building a town on the north east corner of Greenland would help, because it's such a high value intervention area for climate restoration. Maybe based on McMurdo Station in Antarctica. Heavy engineering is required off the Greenland coast to restrict export loss of multi-year ice. Town could be called TEBOSIE; Town Engineering Blockade On Sea Ice Export, (TE-BO-SIE).

With so much of the world's focus on pessimism and negativity, it is refreshing to hear an idea that gives us hope for slowing the temperature rise on earth.

I’m silently screaming that Putin, Pompeo, and Trump won’t let you. They are cheering on the death throes of the Arctic. 😔

When man decided to build nuclear power plants, extract and burn fossil fuels as well as most other industrial production, his only concern was making money with a complete disregard for the effects would have on the natural environment that all life depends on for it's survival. As a result, everything is contaminated; rivers, lakes, oceans the land and air. The only thing that matters is the environment; no environment, no civilization, no life on earth. The laws of nature and the laws of economics are in conflict. The collapse of the biosphere means the collapse of the global economy that is based on perpetual growth from a finite planet! The good Doctor knows we are way past the point of no return!

FACT: The arctic ice melts.

FACT: The arctic ice will grow. There is NO standard.

FACT: Ice takes up more volume than water. When Ice melts in water, the water level goes DOWN.

I bet that it costs a lot to heat that place.
I bet it costs a lot of pollution to fly in the Nostradamus wannabes.
I bet none of those people that are out there bloviating their Ivory Tower Nostradamus creds, while we the people hook them up with fat retirements. and bennies, can actually predict the future of the planet.
I call BS on these arrogant snobs.

Restoring ice? Sustainable future? There is millions of years of sustainable history known and we should try to think up a better idea? Or maybe....look at sustainable life around you.

We know Arctic Sea Ice has gone to ZERO 100s of years ago. The ice that melts in the Ocean does not raise Ocean levels. Why are we talking about this. Talk only about the ice that melts on land that melts into the Ocean. That is the only issue. 80% of Greenland is covered in ICE. I will get concerned when it goes in huge numbers. It is caused by the deforestation in the Sub Tropics. Who is getting them to stop their growth??
