Sensationalism and Space Colonization

Elon Musk recently said Starship will take humans to Mars in 2028, and build a city on Mars in the next 20 years. This isn't going to happen, and saying stuff like this is harmful to space colonization.

I want to clarify this because I’m getting a lot of comments about it: *I am not an elon musk hate channel, * im just a guy who wants space colonization to happen. You’re allowed to call out something you don’t agree with without making hating the person who says it your entire personality. Blindly hating or praising anyone is not a good way to go about things

Also, SpaceX has been an objectively good thing no matter who has been in charge. My criticisms in this video are not toward the thousands of hard working people at SpaceX who are actually building the rockets, they’re toward people who give the public unrealistic expectations

Anyways because there are a lot of "future of space colonization" timelines that are over optimistic, instead of just complaining about it I have decided to make my own

I don't see how colonising Mars before establishing a permanent presence on the Moon makes any sense. I would even consider it downright idiotic. If the Moon has all the necessary materials for building rocket ships (which it most certainly does), I don't see the damn point of avoiding our closest celestial object for human colonisation.

We've been 4-6 years to Mars for like 10 years now.

Getting people to Mars in 20 years is ambitious. Getting people to Mars in 2 years is delusional.

The hype-crash cycle makes me utterly exhausted. At this point I’ve tuned out space news and just wait for things to happen, then I go back and see what I missed

Bro is as optimistic as a late 19th century scifi writer who thinks we'll have been on Neptune by 1990.

I’m 57. The first time I heard “we’ll be on Mars in 20 years” was when Skylab was in orbit, around 1973 or 74. It’s been “20 years in the future” my whole life. During that entire 50-ish years, we only actually had a man-on-Mars program for about 6 or 7 years, which was promptly killed by the next presidential administration. Frankly, if we were gonna go, we would have been there already, probably in the late 1980s.

Ironically, if we *had* gone to Mars the way they promised when I was a kid, we almost certainly would have abandoned it by now. We’d probably have made three expeditions or so, and then just stopped going like we stopped going to the moon.

We’re really bad at follow-through

From a mechanical engineer looking to work in space, thank you for going after this. I feel like people have very unrealistic expectations with regard to space travel and then use up a ton of political/financial capital and goodwill for the space industry just because they fell for a grift.

"The first Crewed starship to Mars would launch in 2026."

Nearly everyone I talk to doesn't even know Artemis is happening!
They just think "oh were going to Mars in 5 years!".

0:10 ...most of the comments were praising Musk; a man who admits that 20-33% of visible accounts on that platform are bots.

Hopefully we can send Elon to Mars as soon as possible, and then leave him there.

Very important to to remember that Elon Musk and SpaceX are two separate things

I stopped caring about space journalism the moment the 15th "INSANE NEW DEEP SPACE SIGNAL DISCOVERED" article was about the same pulsar

I used to be a big fan of Elund until he really started talking about going to mars around 2014 or 15.... claiming it would be a long but easy and entertaining ride on a vessel with restaurants and movie theaters with about 200 civilian passengers per launch. He was talking about selling tickets to anyone for 200K, called the ride "fun and exciting" full of "zero-g games".... this was how he pitched spacex to investors in the beginning. The man is dangerously uninformed and every absurd promise that never comes true or comes in way underpromised... that's another setback for public interest in space exploriation. When Elund is fully revealed as a fraud en masse (for his other "work") the general public will instantly become skeptical of space exploration and set progress back generations possibly. Elund needs to go.
