CHANGE The Trajectory! How Oscar Valdez ALWAYS Finds An Opening

Oscar Valdez has one of the most incredible hook punches ever seen in the ring. Amongst his many accolades, including championships in two weight classes, I would still place the cultivation of this one specific punch as his greatest achievement. The sheer craftsmanship is stunning, and in combination with more advanced tactics, it led to one of the and most skillful knockouts ever captured on film.

But even putting tactics and aesthetics aside, there is a major contradiction behind Valdez’s signature attack. A question just screaming for someone a little too obsessed with all forms of martial arts to answer. And that is, how can such a seemingly wild, winding punch consistently sneak into the smallest cracks between his opponents guard. How does he do everything possible to get immense power but still enjoy the precision?

Over and over, Valdez throws wild haymakers that split the opponent’s guard, where his opponent would expect to be targeted by a straight punch.

This actually comes down to two factors working together, the range that Valdez keeps and the angle of his lead foot and shoulder upon impact.

Been a big fan of Valdez since early on in his career. He is a true Mexican warrior in the ring and proved it against Scott Quigg when he won with a broken jaw! A lot of people wrote him off after the Shakur and Navarette losses and even said he should retire. Glad he is a champion once again.

He throws a hook like how I would throw a side pitch for baseball. But instead of flicking like with baseball, he legit throws his hands lmao.

Great boxer, this punch is very similar to a lead overhand the way he angles it towards the front of the guard instead of coming around the side or back

It's like a relief pitcher generating power from
the "stretch" position.

Your commentary does an excellent job of explaining why some subtle detail is interesting. The more I understand, the more I enjoy watching.

I can see Valdez and Canelo working on their hooks together, perfecting them with and without Reynoso. Both guys are perfectionists

Would love a video about good boxers and their habits that would benefit new OLDER boxers. I'm 51 and would like to learn.

I don't watch boxing that much, don't know of all its history.
First time I've seen this boxer and I couldn't really figure out his hook. I wonder how I have nerver heard of him before as he has such an impressive footwork.
I would rank his hook first because it's scary strong and one can't really predict it coming.

This is what I have loved about his left hook. As shown here, the TELL is INTENTIONAL to force you to confuse yourself. It works as a feint, but in reality, is part of his motion. He can decide where to land as the opponent adjusts. The best tactic is USE YOUR FEET and move away to the left with a foreman-style crossguard or something skin to that. Cover the face and the cheek as you are on the way out. Because he throws everything into that punch, and plants his lead foot so heavily, anticipation and controlled movement can evade the punch, Stevenson, yes, he is another level, and defense and avoiding shots, even by catching them, is his goal. He wants you swinging air, but he showed that just a nice half step timed right can avoid it. Valdez has scary accuracy with that punch, so movement is the way to go. That or you need to CATCH IT. Knock it down, but few Valdez opponents, if any have or will be confident enough to do so. It is that good, and it is or should be the MAIN concern of EVERY Valdez opponent 3:39

That is the nastiest hook I've ever seen in my life. It shouldn't be possible to be that fast AND hit with strange timing at odd angles. He actually shifts his body back, or rotates away, to get the distance he needs to unleash a haymaker at closer range. It's so dangerous with a stance change and if he's retreating with nothing at his back, that punch will make you pay for overreaching. You think he's gonna wind up a right and then a shattering left hook hits you where you didn't expect it.

In the final knockout you could tell that the other fighter had absolutely no idea a punch would come that fast, that hard, from that angle. Not because it isn't possible, but it's just not STANDARD.

Being able to make adjustments to the distance by shifting your body and rolling your shoulders makes it impossible to predict the trajectory. I've just never seen it so FAST.

He is great but the PEDS he did and then still allowed to fight without suspension was weird . Still always loved his style and heart.. the Quigg fight put him on the map

Protip: If you want to know whether a public figure is left or right-handed, google them signing autographs.

Take note that it's not 100% accurate. Pacquiao writes with his right, but plays pool and basketball with his left.
