'Smog-eating' pavement cuts pollution dramatically

Scientists in the Netherlands have come up with a novel way to cut air pollution: smog-eating pavements.
Researchers at Eindhoven University of Technology installed the pavement, made from pavement tiles sprayed with nanoparticles of titanium dioxide in the town of Hengelo.
Titanium dioxide nanoparticles are photocataytic and combine with UV to break down a range of molecules including nitrogen oxides.
In tests the pavement reduced NOx pollution by up to 45 percent under ideal conditions.
Several authorities in the US including the Missouri Department of Transportation have also been experimenting with similar smog-eating products including concrete and roof tiles.
