Does it take up battery power if we put them inside the flash but not really turn the flash on.?

My son has a toy that takes 4 AA batteries which bulb holder would be suitable to connect to it?

I came here because I thought I was doing it right but my flashlight still wouldn't work. I put foil on the positive end of the battery and still no juice. This is a LED flashlight. So far I've never had one of those burn out - the bulb(s) that is. I'm sure I've dropped it before.

Update!! I laid the flashlight down a few minutes to do something else and when I picked it up again the metal exterior was HOT to the touch. I guess the aluminum foil was not such a good idea. But at least now I know the switch is in the on position. Still trying to troubleshoot what is going on. Will dead batteries carry a current using aluminum foil? Something else last year wouldn't work using these batteries but I knew I had just bought them so I didn't throw them out. Any ideas?
