Thanks for sharing. Where I am in Ontario Canada it is considered an invasive species because they crowd out native vegetation resulting in decreased plant biodiversity.
As you mention, it has the potential to alter surrounding water chemistry, which may harm phytoplankton and other aquatic organisms. Like you, I put a 1/2 acre pond in and was told to watch out for this plant as well as phragmites to eliminate them before they take over as a sole dominant species.
