Chelsea tests "P mode" (Program mode) - that full auto mode on your camera - to see if it's good enough for wildlife, portraits, and every day shooting. She was surprised with the results!

If I have too much water, I go into P mode.

I use P Mode and have done for years. I select my max ISO which wont show up much noise of say 400 and then the rest is taken care of. Now with cameras like A7S noise is not really an issue anymore. Back in the days of 120 roll film the ISO or ASA was fixed (say 160) but I would manually select my ideal aperture of say f5.6 and then just play around with adjusting just the shutter speed for each shot while using a Minolta meter. If I needed to stop down for say a wedding cake shot to get more in focus I just did while adjusting to a slower shutter speed. I get on well with P mode in the digital age....but I know it would not be really used for sports or getting that nice blurry background shot (at least not without some further adjustments) Love your channel !

The sponsor segment looked like it was made at least a decade ago.

Look at Joe Buissink. One of the best wedding photographers. He shoot 90% in P Mode.

That's what I love about the Pentax implementation of P mode with their Hyper Shift. Front dial to change shutter speed, rear dial for aperture and green button to reset changes to standard P mode. Just set your max ISO and enable compensation of ISO outside current range and the camera will compensate for you if you happen to have an exposure outside of the max ISO you've set. There's different parameters as well. Shallowest depth of field, maximum depth of field, best aperture of the lens given whichever focal length you're shooting. It's a brilliant implementation.

Tbh the unpredictable nature of P mode makes me only wanna use M, A or S mode

I'm surprised that the steam from soup didn't fog up the lens.

No shame in using AUTO mode if it gets you the shot.

I have a Canon G9X Mk II point & shoot, and I use the P mode all the time since I mainly take "tourist" type pictures, and the P mode produces the best results for me. I did lock the ISO to 400 because I find that's the optimum ISO for both high picture quality and decent low light performance. I also configured the ring for EV compensation so that I can quickly balance the light levels without wasting time going into the menu system.

I like to leave my camera in P mode. So if I have to suddenly grab it and shoot right away I'll at least get something. My mentor taught me, "get it in the can! then fiddle and shoot more. The first one will often be the best one!"

Glad you covered Program Shift (the fact that you still have control over aperture and shutter speed, you don't have to use what the camera initially suggests). In my experience most people who pooh-pooh P mode are unaware of this. You also don't have to use Auto ISO like you did throughout this, you can pre-set a particular ISO. It then works like both A and S mode simultaneously, without having to switch between them, and unlike those modes it will stop you from selecting a value that is outside the range of proper exposure, which can be advantageous in rapidly changing conditions.

When you know exactly what you want, set your camera accordingly. For all other times, P is a pretty practical choice - especially when you don't know what you might see next. And, with just the scroll of wheel near the shutter button i can then change the aperture/shutter speed while keeping the overall exposure.
It is the default mode I choose unless/until there is a specific setting i want to stay unchanged across several shots, which i then lock in via A or S, or M if i want to lock in both aperture and shutter.

The intro when Chelsea is explaining the video is so incredibly sharp with such a tasty blurry background! Would you pls tell me what you used? (Camera, Lens and Settings). And it is 1080p! Why did you use 60fps? I thought pro's would always prefer 24fps...

For honest silent shooting you could try placing your camera in Depeche Mode.

I guess I'm a control freak but I really don't like the camera changing anything but the focus I may miss opportunities because of that but I definitely lost a lot opportunity before I learned manual.
