The soulful feature in Fire emblem Engage no one talks about

People have been wanting characters to do this for years, often referring to Tellius supports in path of radiance as an example of how characters should react to current events in the game, but I've seen few to no people point out that this is actually also the case in fire emblem engage as well.

Nothing can beat Valentia's characters screaming in agony in the post-battle results if their best friends or loved ones just died though, that was brutal

Maybe I’m just easy to impress but I found it so cool on my first playthrough and talked to someone post battle and they talked about how they were tired of being on the bench and wanted to participate. Stuff like that and them getting excited for doing really well is why I’ll always push back that Engage has a bad cast, the game really does give them tons of moments to really express themselves

When you suffer from success and never lose anyone and never get the sad convos.

In all seriousness it is a nice touch, I think Valentia implemented this too and it was very interesting!

I remember losing my Lapis in an ironman and just being heartbroken, she'd done so much during that run. I went to talk to Citrinne after the combat and she talked about how strong Lapis was, and how she can't believe she's gone. I didn't even know that feature existed until then, because I'd never bothered to check, but I'm glad I did this time. Core memory of that playthrough.

On my first playthrough rosado died, and goldmary’s dialogue was genuinely tragic it was SO good

Never knew about the mourning dialogue, probably because I never lose units.

Engage is peak and people are just afraid to admit it

Ahhhh that's why I was healing 50% of damage dealt from the loss of a unit, it was the SOL

Like many over world map features. Many don't want to talk about it due to it not being the main game content. 3 houses fans will ignore the slog of the daily stuff like a plague 😅

Shadows of Valentia, Three Houses and Engage have all had characters react to the world around them and I'm really glad this is becoming a series norm. A big criticism I have for older titles (looking at you Shadow Dragon) is how most side characters are essentially just... there. They join, say their 2-3 lines of dialogue and do nothing more. A death quote? Cool... That's it.

I really like when the Fire Emblem games have characters react to non-scripted character deaths, even if it's a feature that most players (who don't do ironman runs or who always reset/rewind if a character dies) might never see. I was always a little surprised that Fates for example had no reactivity in this aspect. Like when Kaze's bizarre scripted death happened on my first blind run of Birthright, I found it pretty odd that Saizo had no reaction at all, in cutscene dialogue or even in My Castle.

This isn't entirely new to engage

The Fodlan duology had many lines where characters would discuss about what happened and Hopes in particular changes its dialogue a lot if you kill/spare certain characters

But the "what if close person died" and map-reaction dialogues are probably a first for the series. I hope we get more of that in the future

I really like this. It’s a shame I can count the number of interesting characters from Engage on one hand, this game deserved better.

Allowing the characters to mourn is really nice

When Etie inevitably dies in the run, Alfred and Boucheron are pretty sad...
A cool detail even if it's a sad fact

I guess they did try to experiment that with three houses ? I know each month gives you a new dialogue too !

Older titles or Kaga games tended to have dialogues or supports about what was going on tho, but on a lesser scale i think ?

I really should've done this more because yeah, this really is a cool detail. When I inevitably go back for round 3 I'll have to pay closer attention.

It's really a shame the post battle dialogue was bugged until one of the last updates. I think a lot of players ended up completely missing it since it would be overidden by generic bond fragment dialogue.

i think its weird that we have to point out "even if the writing on the whole wasnt the best". like, that statement could apply to every fire emblem game, and in fact almost every piece of media. its just weird that engage in particular gets called out for not having perfect writing.

Alright serious comment though, this is actually a very nice feature, and if they put more effort into making the actual story good, this is the kind of stuff that can really elevate a Fire Emblem game. Sadly, when they put so little effort into the dialogue and world-building, things like this sadly feel very hollow.
