[TRANSCRIPT]

In the DermTV episode on "What Causes Your Face to Age," I explained how age related loss of fat, and age and sun related loss of elastic tissue in your facial skin along with subtle bone loss results in the literal INVERSION of the normally upside down triangular form of facial features that usually define a youthful face...

...how aging literally flips the triangle over into an upright triangle as the aging facial shape goes from tapered...

...to cylindrical and then even a little pear shaped.

Today, I'll explain how plastic surgeons and cosmetic dermatologists help to make you look younger by effectively flipping your triangle back to its youthful orientation.

Lets start with plastic surgery. In very simplified form, a face lift literally...

What I just described corrects sagging, and of course the lines and wrinkles associated with the sagging and loss of elastic tissue. It improves the undesirable shape but doesn't add back lost volume unless cheek implants...

...or other augmentation procedures are done. This surgical procedure works mostly by pulling or lifting the skin. These improvements last many years but don't forget... No ones getting younger!

Cosmetic dermatologists do it differently.

All of these treatments contribute to restoring the youthful shaped face. These techniques of course don't last as long as plastic surgery but don't require surgery and are considered non invasive.

Many of us choose to age naturally, relying on the happiness of inner beauty without trying to turn back the time related changes they see in their mirror. For those of us who choose to hang on to some of the facial aspects of a more youthful appearance, many effective techniques are available. In choosing a cosmetic dermatologist or plastic surgeon, make sure you do your due diligence. Personal recommendations from your physicians and friends are very important.

@sohnhyes I think skin firming lotion. But for me I do facial exercises, I know some ppl prob. think it does not work. But works for me and I'm turning 40 and am a mother of 2 kids. I try to use natural skin care products and I noticed a big difference. My skin used to look so dry and dull and aging. Now its getting firmer, and its soft and no dullness.

Hi Dr. Schultz. I have been doing glycolic peels since I was twenty years old and am now 48. I was told that glycolic is not as efficacious as retin a when it comes to anti-aging because glycolic sits on the sin whereas retin-a can go deeper into the dermis and "change" the skin cells. Is this true? I would rather get a prescription than go to the salon for peels if I need to. This person told me glycolic cannot penetrate and change the skin cells to "behave" better but retin a can. Should I use both?

@Angelmagik2 I used Tretinoin(retin A) before. My derm told me to use Moisturizer afterwards. I used oil free because I was prone to acne. I don't think Vit C alone is good enough a moisturizer..depends on your skin type.

@tessab0o There is something you can do. I would try to use natural products, eating plenty of fresh fruits and veggies (organic) and do facial exercises.
