Well done on getting remonetized. I'm so glad you can continue your interesting work. Chantrelle is a case that has never got much attention and is mostly forgotten even in Scotland. However, it was a sensation in its day. As an extra piece of detail, Chantrelle was known to Robert Louis Stevenson, who was a young man at the time. He met Chantrelle on several occasions at his old french teacher's house and went drinking with him at least once. Stevenson attended the trial and was fascinated by what he saw as the double nature of a man who he had known to be charming and educated. It's likely that this formed some basis for his later novella Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

Horrifying beyond belief. Victorian times were scary as hell.

I bet Elizabeth's father regretted afterwards having brought a life of mysery to his daughter and later her demise when he forced this marriage for the sake of reputation. Poor Elizabeth.

Poor Elizabeth. She had no way out back then. His actions certainly showed he was guilty. Great story and thank you for the video.

Sounds like Eugene drugged the 1st girl (the one that applied for the maid’s job?) and Elizabeth ... I can’t imagine having to marry a man who did that to me.

I am sure Elizabeth's father regretted pushing Eugene to marry his daughter. There four children lost both their parents. And what good did the life insurance policy do him in the end.

I wonder what happened to her children after she was murdered? In all honesty, they would have been his next victims if he was not caught. He needed all of them out of the way to binge on his selfish cruelty. The clear pattern of abuse is tragic. Leave and come back when they swear to change. Men and women face this daily and abusers never change. Thank you for another great video. Always a good day when I can start it with a cup of coffee and come Brief Case. Stay well!

Got to watch out for the wine 'one glass and bam with child'
On a serious note it's a pity she couldn't escape even though she tried, destitution or death what a choice and that the police couldn't get him for attempted murder before he killed her.

‘University of Nonce’ (I know it’s Nantes but it made me chuckle because I’m an immature idiot). Thank you for uploading, you tend to cover cases I’ve often never heard of before and keep us all going during lockdown!

A very interesting case. It is really sad just how hard things were for women back then. To know that if things had been different, that if it weren't so difficult on women to divorce then maybe she would have lived. At least he didn't get away with it. Thank you, Brief Case, for another great Monday morning video. 😊
