Pokémon Stadium Was WEIRD (And Awesome) | RETROspective

Some of my earliest Pokémon memories come from the Pokémon Stadium games on N64 - and it ends up that a TON of people played these games! From the Game Boy Tower to epic 3D Mewtwo battles to minigames that are honestly pretty rad, Pokémon Stadium 1 and 2 on the Nintendo 64 offered a lot to love for Pokémon fans back in the day. But, how do they hold up in 2020?

This is RETROspective, the series where I take a look back at games from my past to see how they hold up today! In today's video, I (Jamie) and Trey take a retrospective look back at how Pokémon Stadium was weird and awesome, and look at Pokémon Stadium 1 (Japan), Pokémon Stadium 1 (International), Pokémon Stadium 2, and even Pokémon Battle Revolution on the Nintendo Wii!

We gotta catch 'em all like it's 1998!

The Stadium games were where I started to understand playing Pokemon intelligently, not thinking a Rare Candied, lv.100 Charizard with three fire moves and Hyper Beam was good. The Gameboy Tower only being able to play Pokemon games wasn't an issue to me at all. I only had a Gameboy to play Pokemon, anyway. As someone whose primary focus is Pokemon battles and had no humans to play against until college, Stadium 1, 2, Colosseum, and Battle Revolution were godsends to me.

I'm so grateful for the ability to load your Pokemon from Gameboy carts into the N64 cart. My Blue and Yellow carts are basically dead now, presumably due to internal battery limitations. But the N64 carts recharge their batteries when played, so some of my Pokemon and my mom's Pokemon from our original 1990s playthroughs live on. Most notably, my Gyarados and her Hypno, both of which became absolute legends in their respective playthroughs.

Pokémon Stadium was my first Pokémon experience until my dad bought a DS in like 2008, so thanks to Stadium i learnt the type effectiveness and that kind of stuff.
Btw i just LMAO'd myself when you said BR was the best Tech Demo on the Wii, i couldn't agree more. Nice video!

Pokémon Stadium was the reason why I discovered Pokémon as a gaming franchise, even before the Game Boy games. The idea of playing with pokémon in 3D was just too exciting not to try it, especially if you were a 10-years old kid, and posteriorly allowed me to try the GB games via the Game Boy tower. Stadium brings me lovely memories of my mom, who I can't see nowadays because of Covid, and the effort she did to buy me those games despite not being cheap at the time.

Thanks for the upload bud. Pokemon Stadium 2 was one of the only memories where my step dad and I actually shared an intimate moment with each other.

Interesting thing about those Pokemon stadium games, at my first job over at Hastings (long defunct) both of those games were extremely popular rentals. Rent the game for 5 days for $3, what a steal. :)

I remember preordering Stadium 1 at KB Toys, and there some mild traffic on the way to the mall. I remember seriously asking my dad “😮 you think this is because everyone is rushing to get Pokemon??”

Great video guys. I didn’t know about the wii game I’m just currently building up the roster on Pokémon yellow to import into Stadium for the first time ever, was a dream as a kid. But I have gen 4 games and a ds and will have to pick up the Wii stadium guy. I’m not big on mini games so even though you say it’s just straight battle I’d be in too that. Thanks!

Would love to see another stadium game that is basically Pokemon showdown. I don't have time to grind Pokemon anymore now that I'm an adult with responsibilities. I just want to get online with a competitive team and battle

I love Battle Revolution. The UI is perfect and the lighting is pretty damn good. But yeah it is paper thin on content unless you have a DS game. Also just saying, bootleg copies of the games are compatible with BR. :-) but Stadium 2 will always be my go to console Pokemon battl game

I loved PBR back then because I had a full national living dex on Diamond, it made the game awesome and I used to try my EV trained mons on wifi battles. Those were good times!

Making me feel old...I found my first pokemon game in the dirt at a baseball field. Blew it out and plugged it in. I still have that copy of Pokemon Blue, but it stopped holding a save about a decade ago.
