The fact that Demi is shown so exposed and beautiful and the character can’t see it is what makes it so heartbreaking. Fantastic film.

This movie is a punch in the face of the beauty/youth obsessed people. Amazing and insane.

I think Demi is getting that Oscar. That scene in front of the mirror was utterly heartbreaking.

The scenes where they were violent towards each other shook me to my core. Nowhere in cinema have I ever seen such a raw, visceral and literal portrayal of self hatred.
Watching this film after decades of struggling with body dysmorphia and a deficit in self compassion, those scenes felt so sobering. The violence towards your own body, the anger at the displays of human existence within the self, the sorrow and regret when faced with the irreversible damage you have done to your body in pursuit of a standard you were never meant to achieve - it was a heartbreaking prompt to question the value we put on our image both personally and as a society.
I expected this film to tiptoe on the line between powerful imagery and triggering imagery but it completely went beyond my expectations. After watching many films about self image, I always felt these films couldn’t be done without feeding into/inspiring self destruction. The Substance only made me think of self compassion and how often it’s actually practiced/encouraged in life. It made me feel so much compassion for myself after violently hating and hurting myself in the pursuit of “beauty”.

This film definitely didn’t heal me but it completely reinforced all the reasons why I want to.

This film was a trip and a half. I'm not squeamish by nature but there were moments in this film that made my stomach churn.

The sound design on this movie was amazing. Most don't realize how much it affects the tone and emotion of the film. It was like the director has worked in sound design and knew exactly how to push it to the extreme. The visuals are amazing, but many movies mess it up with poor audio, which is 50% of the experience.

Demi went all the way there, she absolutely has to get some recognition for this performance. Best horror film I've seen in a long time.

I am still blown away by Demi’s performance in this film, I cannot imagine anyone else doing what she just did. I understand the film has such polarized critics but I hope she can be judged fairly and she achieves the prizes she deserve.

I love that this is tapping into the fear of aging and learning to accept yourself over seeking validation in others based off of something superficial like beauty. And I think it was really great casting in Demi who has been scrutinized for her looks since the beginning of her career.

this was really an amazing movie. it earned every second of the 2 and a half hours, not a single second was wasted to display its message that they wanted to convey. genuinely one of the best movies of this year

One of the greatest body-horrors ever made. Especially by someone whose last name isn't Cronenberg. Coralie Fargeat has placed herself firmly on equal footing with both Cronenbergs: Elder, _and_ Younger. I don't think I need to say that this isn't an easy task, and it's one many other directors have attempted (with varying success) but she actually did it!

A lot of directors, who attempt Cronenbergian body horror, fail to realize that what makes this sort of film work isn't the gross-out, or the gore, but the human element.

_The Fly_ worked because it wasn't about a guy turning into a fly, but about a couple dealing with a terminal illness that will make its victim violent before it eventually kills him.

_The Substance_ gets right at the heart of several deeply human themes, not the least of which are ageing, self-image, the cruelty of showbusiness, and loving who you are. And it does this while neither coming off as preachy NOR diluting its message in the slightest. Quite the opposite: the horror doesn't work without the message.

Not an easy task for anyone to accomplish.

Accepting yourself as you are at any given time and not being too greedy with change.

I would respect so much any actress that doesn’t use plastic surgery. Confidence and aging gracefully is way more attractive than desperately trying to cling to an unrealistic standard of “beauty”
