Ruger LC9/LC9S 9rd Extended Magazine Overview and Comparison

EDIT 10/15/17 I DO NOT recommend this magazine anymore. I went to the range this week with a buddy and shot the LC9S extended mag several times. We had at least three instances of the magazine failing to lock back the slide after firing the last round. I did have it loaded to max capacity for at least 6 months or so. However, this is no excuse. I had a fellow Youtuber comment complaining of the same issues who had to return his mag. I just want to give a word of caution for people buying this magazine. Please test it out extensively on your pistol and see if you run into the same issues. I would hate for it to malfunction when you need it the most.

EDIT 9/16/17 Just discovered that this extended magazine may have a newer redesign of the finger extension piece. There are other extended magazines on the market (I'm assuming earlier models) with the same UPC that lack the finger grooves on the sides and the notch on the back of the magazine. I don't think that this makes a significant difference, but I'm sure many would opt for the newer design if given an option! Thank you Francisco G. for bringing this to our attention!

EDIT 9/7/17 - Correction: There is a way to tell if there is an 8th or 9th round in this extended magazine. There is one additional hole at the front of the magazine toward the bottom and just before the finger grip extension. When the magazine is loaded to the 7th OR 8th round, the black follower is displayed through the hole (instead of just open space). On the 9th round, you will see the very end of the 9th bullet. I tested this with different rounds (hollow points, FMJ, and snap caps) to verify and it indeed works. It's not as intuitive, somewhat hard to see, and you can't tell if you're on the 7th or 8th round. But at least you will be able to tell if you're at capacity! Thank you Sami for sharing this with us.

Here is our overview of the 9rd extended magazine for the Ruger LC9/LC9S compared to the OEM 7rd magazine with finger extension. Overall, I think it is a great option despite some minor criticisms. I would also like to note that some of the play indicated in the video may be attributed to the fact that the magazine/gun was fully unloaded.

I really like this Ruger 9 round extended magazine. It's worked perfectly for me. This with an extra round in the chamber plus the original magazine I can carry 17 rounds with this sub-compact. I have had no negative effects while using the extended magazine. In fact, it improves my grip.

I bought this gun for its 380 size! But it's a 9mm. I have the Houge grip because of larger fingers. Also have 9 shot extended magazine. The trigger is 4 to 5 pds. I have owned a Sig 239 9mm 8 shot. A Springfield XD-9mm compact. Nice gun package and kit. Also 13 and 16 rd mags with 4 18 rd extra mags. Sold it when the Ruger Lc9s 9mm pro came out! Put high viz Orange paint on front sight! Now it's the 9mm. I have always wanted! Give it a try! Make it the way. I did! You will not go back to your old CCW. This is the only one you will ever need! Shawn

On the front side of the magazine the lower part up the base there is a small hole to show the ninth round so they didn't forgot about it in the design

Perfect! Was looking for expansion options for this little guy i have yet to buy. Im likely to buy 4 to 5 of these magazines, to dial in skill without abrupt stops due to the low capacity of a single stack 9mms thanks dude💯💪.

I had this gun purchased and just before I picked it I exchanged it for the Smit and Weston MP Shield and I could not be happier .. ( is a good gun but the Shield is just much better for me )

I have had this mag for a year and did not realize it was an extended mag. I thought it was just the grip, cause of the hole numbering.

Thanks for the extra two rounds i'll carry now. 👍

fun fact, you can't see how many rounds are in the magazine when they are in the gun. not that dropping the mag and counting the rounds had ever crossed the minds of the designers or serious users. I'm also not sure what guns have rock solid magazines when seated, they all wiggle a little, no matter how high end of a gun it may be

I didn't see any other options for mags with this gun at the shop where I purchased my extended clip.

I agree with the comment on the fit of the magazine. I would expect better from the factory. The added length and capacity is a good benefit.

First of all, let me thank you for an informative and well done video, but I disagree with your conclusion. As consumers of a firearm we should hold our manufacturers to a higher standard. The magazine barely fits the gun. There is a varying gap between the magazine and the frame. The surfaces don't even match up. The parts fit is poor (too much play). They used the same 7 round housing. Shame on you Ruger!

do you know if the LC9s & the LC9s Pro use the exact same magazines? does the LC9s Pro require magazines exclusively unto it's self? thanks!

i think that extended mag should have been made better by ruger to fit better. i see what you're talking about in the video and i think there's no good excuse by ruger for not making the extended mag fit better? it matters to me because i like things to fit right and especially in quality firearms. as you said looks like it'll work ok though.

i had a bad experience with ProMag brand magazines in a Sig P229. ProMag made a crappy fitting extended mag for that gun. it made me mad when i got it in the mail and tried it in the gun. it's fit was so sloppy and poor that i'll never ever buy any ProMag magazines again. i'm not talking about a little play - i'm talking about a crappy fit all the way up to being a major slop fitting. so bad, i wouldn't even use the magazine. Pro Mag brand magazines are a piece of crap (respectfully). a waste of money.

i'm like you in that i will only buy OEM stuff for any of my guns. however, those Mecgar
brand italian made magazines i've seen are good IMO. i positively will only buy ruger OEM magazines for this LC9s Pro that i have and nothing else.

thanks again

when you clean your LC9s do you take-down the captive slide return springs or just clean them with it still captive / still assembled? thx!
