Protests and boycotts surrounding the iPhone 16 launch have taken centre stage with thousands gathering outside Apple stores worldwide, from London to Tokyo. Activists chant slogans like "A child died in Congo for your iPhone," highlighting the exploitation linked to mining minerals in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. This episode explores how young consumers are pushing for change and accountability from Apple. We'll discuss the intersection of technology, human rights and the values driving today's young generation. As we unpack these protests, we challenge our audience to consider the ethical implications of their purchasing decisions and the role of corporations in global injustices.

Presenter: Anelise Borges

Guests:
Tariq Raouf - writer and activist
Maurice Carney - director of Friends of the Congo
Nicholas Muirhead - reporter and producer
Roshan Dadoo - coordinator of the South African BDS (Boycott Divestment and Sanctions) Coalition

iPhone 16 is banned in Indonesia so you can say our country has done the most at boycotting it.

Boycotting the iphone sounds legitimate when you look at their ethics and standards regarding supply chains.

- Terrorist Natanyahu regime let the attack happen on his own country, despite knowing about the attack 3 days before it happened.
- Music festival was organised with lot of foreigners just 3 miles away from the border. On whose order?
- Music festival was extended by one day as the attack did not happen when it was thought to happen. On whose order?
- Noticing that music festival casualty were less, used IDF to increase the casualties in the music festival. On whose order?

I strongly support boycotts. We have a right to boycott companies that do not meet our moral standards. However boycotts for a lack of a voiced position moves to the arena of extortion. Athletes, individuals, media influencers, companies, groups, artists, and others all have the right not to voice an opinion on any political or social issue. The only people who must voice an opinion are politicians.

There is a freedom of speech and this freedom should not be unjustly oppressed. Freedom of speech includes not speaking just as the freedom of religion includes the freedom from religion.

What? Apple wants to be tax free for 50 years and invest only a few hundred million dollars in Indonesia? Just build a factory in Antarctica if they want taxes like that, 🤣

Apple should be embarrassed

So you're saying that only Apple is guilty of purchasing resources from these ethically-questionable sources? No other tech manufacturer has their hands dirty? Why are you singling out just 1 company which doesn't even actually do their own manufacturing? Everything Apple sells is manufactured by a contractor. If anything, Apple is probably the most ethically-responsible tech company out there. Why isn't anyone going after any other company? Why is no1 going after the mine owners or producers instead?

People need to understand that the world doesn’t revolve around a single country.
Whether you like it or not, the progress of development isn’t going to stop.

FYI:

Nearly all lithium ion batteries have cobalt (Congo mined), including EVs.

Most electronic devices now have lithium batteries not just the classical stuff (laptops, tablets, smartphones).

Any impact on Apple this so called boycott? None.

Apple valued at $3.5 trillion. Microsoft and Nvidia right there.

Top 8/10 companies American (Saudi Armco and Taiwan’s TSM being the 2 exceptions).

Top 62/100 American.

Even though I don't care for Apple, I'm happy they're not becoming political!

Y’all a bunch of zombies in here??? Apple isn’t the only company guilty of these things. Yes Apple is one of the biggest companies but they’re not the only ones. What’s wrong with you guys in here. Tech companies, food and drink companies, clothing companies, shoe companies, vehicle part…etc. Androids, iPhones, the leather in your couch, the pj’s your wearing right now. Focusing on just one company is just lazy. I appreciate other pieces of tech is mentioned in this video but this headline is just clickbait.

I mean iphone 16 was just a fix of iphone 15 pro disaster and people had enough of this and want a good upgrade not like 1 to 10% but like 30 to 50%

you people are naive. of course these western tech companies are complicit, & some even directly responsible for what’s happening in the congo and palestine. but….as with the gestapo, you can’t question them.
