Classical Literary Criticism

Classical Literary Criticism by Penguin Classics is a collection of writings from ancient Greek and Roman thinkers—Plato, Aristotle, Horace, and Longinus. They have laid the foundation for how we think about literature and art, and it’s a guide to how they analyzed poetry, drama, and other forms of storytelling.

Hi Emmelie!
What a great thing you're showing us in the video! Definitely will save it as a possible future read. The classical world is so interesting, isn't it? Having the possibility to read the ones who shaped our way of thinking is incredible!
Take care and see you soon!

I applaud your endeavor . I have read alot of the ancient translation of historical history by Caesar, Herodotus, and others for the pure knowledge that I could understand.

First of all, I want to thank you for being who you are.
You are such a pleasant and harmonious person that even the first seconds of your video have a beneficial effect on my soul.
As always, I was waiting for your new video with great hope and planned to write in my comment only what is related to the content of the video. But right now I can't do that because I'm overwhelmed with emotions.
At night, the Russian army attacked our city of Sumy with a drone - it hit a nine-story residential building. Unfortunately, 7 civilians died, many were injured, more than 100 people were left homeless, rescue operations are ongoing.
As I wrote earlier, such cases have happened before, and the air alarm in our city continues for days.
As you can understand, the emotional background is negative, but, as I also wrote earlier, we are not giving up.
Despite the horrors around me, I try to read whenever possible, work and help others.
Your videos and you personally are like a ray of light breaking through the clouds for me.
Sorry for such pathetic words, but they are true.
Thank you for the video and for being you!

Greetings, lovely Emmelie. It's always a pleasure to listen to you and learn something new. We have something in common: quotes from authors, whether philosophers or poets, are like apples we bite into, tasting sweet on our lips. Literature is truly vast and offers something for every taste. In my case, I enjoy poets and philosophers who explore transcendental themes. I also appreciate poets who are majestic in their expression and speak the truth about the human condition — I truly enjoy them and sometimes recite their works aloud.

The chapters of philosophy I like are "German Idealism, " and in literature, "Romanticism."

P.S.: Teach us how to play the piano; I saw that you have one. See you, take care!

Not sure if anyones ever mentioned it but your voice is very relaxing, gives me asmr tingles. Plato has been on my list for a while. Philosophy is probably my least read genre. It can be intimidating but just have to start like you mentioned

Hello Emmelie! I hope you are well. Great video and really interesting topic. While my TBR and TBP (To be Purchased) list is way out of control, I will keep this book in mind for possible future reading. It does motivate me to want to pull Suetonius' Lives of the Caesars and Thucydides History of the Peloponnesian War that have been sitting on my shelf for many years. Great video and I look forward to your next one. Have a great day! 😀

Thank you for this Emmelie. This sounds like a very useful book. I'm glad you made reference to your commonplace book in the second part of the video. I was thinking in the first part of this video that this seemed like a good book for an author. It seems like you have come across a real gem. As always - happy reading!🙂📖

May I ask where you get the beautiful editions in French? I'm reading French pretty well now (with my Kobo) and would like to get some nice physical copies. Thanks!

Greetings Emmelie. Love the channel. Been watching a few weeks and it's great. And I'm even checking out The Painter's Muse and really enjoying it! P.S. I think your first impression of Plato was pretty spot on, lol. Pythagoras was even worse. Maybe try for some Heraclitus at some point to even things out. Cheers.

All great literature and artistic expression is born from deep feeling, whether ancient or modern.

Really like the way you have presented this video 💖- inserting quotes and common place book ideas and turning the book upside down - never thought of that. I have been trying to take the plunge and start Plato's Republic - bought the Penguin Classics translation by Christopher Rowe as it has an audible for the same translation but so far I haven't started it. Just lack of motivation I think. Somewhere in there is Plato's allegory of the cave which is fun.

I love Byron’s satiric verses about ancient poetry:

Ovid’s a rake, as half his verses show him,
Anacreon’s morals are a still worse sample,
Catullus scarcely has a decent poem,
I don’t think Sappho’s ode is a good example,
Although Longinus tells us there is no hymn
On which the Muse soars forth on wings more ample…

Reading classical literary criticism is worth it just for the sake of getting this reference 🙂❤️
