I have no idea, but I just use dry cat food. And even if a deer or something kicks it out of the ground but doesn't set it off, a raccoon will still reach in there and eat it. So my guess is mouse or chipmunk, something that could get to all of it without triggering trap.

Idk about the ground but maybe a bird if it got the bait

Put golf balls on top of your dog proofs it helps keep mice and stuff away

I would say without freeze / thaw, the ground problem is moles . As for the bait being gone, coons can and will pick it all out and not get caught ! I have watched them do it ! Good luck !
