how dare you make me cry with the very first story

The first story was absolutely saddening, but bittersweet. A father telling his daughter how proud he is of her in his final moments is just heartbreakingly beautiful.

The last story actually made me tear up a bit. Not only going out like a badass, but thanking your friends for accompanying you, and then the as you fade away, your oath is heard faintly. That right there is something out of mythology.

The last interaction between my paladin and his cousin, a fighter/cleric played by a friend. My paladin said "One of these days, I won't be there to save your sorry backside."

The very next combat, my friend's character was killed by a Naga, and my Paladin was not quick enough to save him.

I just wanted to compliment your choice in music, the _“in time you’ll know the tragic extent of my failings”_ vibe works great for stories about last words that make you miserable

My first and only attempt at a Drow.

Due to toxic party syndrome and in-game racism my first character in that campaign, a female Drow Rogue, was excommunicated from the party in a few sessions. I was still allowed to play her in solo sessions with the DM, and my new character joined the party as we followed her trail as we all (in game for me and in and out of game for them) blamed her for the schism that caused the split. And they were hunting her down for revenge. As my Drow wandered the surface, she would do her best to help people with bad situations without drawing attention to herself, but would always stick around too long after the fact and get spotted. This was important because it gave my party clues on how to pursue her, and opportunities for them to see that she wasn't what they all thought a Drow was. They never did, always undoing whatever good she did, assuming it was all part of some evil master plan.

In the final battle, when the party FINALLY was able to catch up to her, she had already heard of their exploits undoing everything she was doing and how she was their white whale. She simply looked at them all one by one and said, "I'm sorry", before drinking from a flask and then keeling over with foam coming from her mouth. The party had driven her to suicide and me to tears, which I contained until I got home, not wanting to give them the satisfaction of seeing me cry as that entire encounter was designed by myself and the DM to give them none. The campaign ended that night as well as the party, no longer with a perceived BBEG to chase and scapegoat to blame all of their BS on, imploded in-game not even an hour later after divvying up the zero loot my Drow had on her.

The DM was cool and all, but I never went back.

Dad!! We are here, don't go!!"

And your life fades away, your last vision is your twin daughters crying, trying to reach you before the inevitable end.

You couldn't be any happier, knowing that they are alive, and the enemies horde never come close to hurting them.

Had a kenku rogue named Lute, a bit of a kleptomaniac obsessed with shiny stuff. He also had a family at home that he would send 75% of any loot he got. When asked where he sent the majority of his share hewould make the sound of a flute and the sound of a music box playing a slow melody. After a nasty encounter with a wyvern and some bad saving throws from the poison. He passed, but not before mournfully making the flute and music box sounds, the party later met his wife and daughter named flute and music box respectively and knew they were the last thoughts in his mind.

I joined a LONG campaign as a noob to d&d. I chose ranger and got buddied with the teams other ranger. He was a d&d vet and showed me the ropes. Father figure Ranger & I were in a tower shooting down into a courtyard to protect our companions. The tower we were in was a watchtower used to throw fireflasks, oil & bombs onto invading forces. As we were shooting, a flaming ballista on the opposite rampart took aim at us and fired, it shot low striking the tower. I was new and inexperienced to d&d and on my next turn foolishly fired at the ballista to kill it, the next ballista shot would hit the tower and nuke it from orbit due to the fireflasks and bombs. In a split second decision, my mentor used his action to cast a feather fall scroll on me, screamed “MAVRICK GET And shoved me from the tower. His turn ended and the ballista fired, the explosion was so massive the DM said tremors from the explosion were felt 5 miles away in the village we came from. Our team was speechless, some even cried. His character was there from the beginning, all to die in such an unceremonious way. Ranger was totally content with it and was satisfied knowing he laid down his life to save his pupil. That was long ago, but his final words were the one thing that have stuck with me in my mind, possibly forever. It was almost like the church tower explosion straight outta Saving Private Ryan..

Was in a campaign where I was a warforged fighter who was part of the kingdom guard. One of the other players was a barbarian with a cruel sense of humor. As the campaign went on we became good friends and he eventually made a family. I became the "uncle" to their family and did whatever I could to help them. Then came one encounter, we were fighting an aboleth, the party was quickly running out hp and options. My character made one last-ditch effort and threw himself at the aboleth, since he was the only one who could fight it without fear of drowning, but not before turning to the barbarian and telling him "hey, make sure that kid of yours never forgets me" as I handed him all the gold I had on my character and my most prized possession, a military badge made specifically for me by the king with his royal seal on it. The barbarian and my friend who played him were confused and scared as I jumped at the aboleth and yelled to the whole party to get the hell out of there. Once my friend realized what was going on, he threw a fit at the DM and me but quickly turned into crying as his barbarian gave a proud salute to his best friend and loyal comrade.

Not me that broke but, I was very proud of really getting to one of my players.

I typically like to get characters invested in the world through NPCs but I had one character/player who refused to get attached through an entire campaign levels 1-20, him playing the flirtatious ladies man. We ended that campaign with his character disappearing into the unknown at the end. Start 2nd campaign taking place 75 years later in world. When the second set of characters found this lost soul the player immediately needed to run a side session or two to figure out how his old character got there.

We began were he vanished, on an expedition into the unknown. I ran him through landing an expedition on a strange shore. Little by little his company vanished or died. He called the retreat for the bulk of the forces, staying behind with a small handful of NPC helpers to find the lost. Among them I gave him a childhood friend who just simply told him “I go where you go.” She had been telling him that their whole lives, acting as his cohort in crime. In this strange land it was no different. One by one their small group perished to the monsters in the mist. He started getting attached. When it was down to 4 of them, they decided to hide out in a cave and became intimate as a group. After, she looked to his character and said "I'm never going to admit that happened, " but smiled. The next day’s trek another was gravely wounded. They hid out again, this time in a ruined castle. Here a member of the group became possessed by the 2nd campaign’s BBEG (now revealed). So they were down to just the two of them. They ran, hounded by the villain. Finally, cornered the BBEG saw his desperation to save this last party member and decided to kill her instead. Big battle ensues and the villain’s goal is achieved. As she lay dying in his arms she reached up and held his cheek. “You can’t go where I’m going.” I described her hand dropping to the ground and the player broke. He cried and muttered, “Damn you. I love it.”

A runaway alchemist named Dr. Fennel Scarlet. She ran away from her family to be an alchemist in an actor of defiance, then ran away from the royal research team after she didn't want to do cruel experiments, and then ran away from the Kingdom of Plasmain since she knew too much information since she worked with royal research team. After doing odd jobs on the run, she eventually met up with the party, who was fighting aginst the Kingdom of Plasmain since they were invading the land. She grew fond with all of them, but escelcially with Fey Warlock since his entire thing is trying to find loop holes in contracts. Evntually she did confess her backstory while everyone was having a contest on seeing who has the most tragic backstory. But eventually the Kingdom of Plasmain did find her and sent a massive invasion to finally kill her. Hearing the news of the invasion, Dr. Fennel Scarlet decided to use the weapons the royal research team were experimenting on, a gas weapon that causes poison, blight, and when ignited, explodes. Due to the sheer size of the army, the party was split up due to deal with the army. So the part of the army she saw was a bunch of foot soldiers, so she ran into the army and release the gas She did fail the con save and got poisoned, but she had enough health to run away from the army to heal herself. She was about to escape, but there was a nearby house fire she failed to see account for and she was in the explosion. She did manage to survive the explosion and the Fey Warlock was the only one who was near her. He then give her a potion to heal her. But because of the poison and blight damage the gas also gave, she died in his arms. Her last words were:
"My entire life was about defiance. I thought I was going to defy death too."
So being her closest friend, he used misty step to escape to a nearby house so he could escape the eyes of the army. He then used dark delirium on the remaining forces and managed to drive enough of the army away so the general was alone with the party.

Not a PC, but my party were fighting a group of what we thought were bandits. It turns out they were a huge faction led by War Priests and Clerics.
We had killed many of them, and it led to a final showdown between my character, a young Cleric of the Primordial Plane of Fire, and the final War Priest. I upcast Inflict Wounds to the highest level I can, which left him with just a few hit points left.

I draw my longsword, and stabbed it into him to finish him off. He gave my Cleric a proud smile, despite us never having met before. "You'd make a fine War Priest, miss."

The DM later explained that he meant my Cleric was skilled in what they admired. She was strong, powerful with her magic, and capable of keeping her allies alive and healthy whilst also getting involved in the combat herself.

It really made me think a lot about my character and how she faced combat.

12:42 oof that hits me like the Rise Against line "I found a shoulder to lean on, an infallible reason to live all by itself. I took one last look from the heights that I once loved, and then I ran like hell." Which hits me extra hard because it always reminds me of how my two boyfriends helped me overcome the nearly-suicidal depressive state I was in when we met.
