There's a really good rundown of the different genres of EDM floating around on the internets somewhere. It doesn't really matter though since artist break the barriers and crossover genres all the time.

Hate to double post, but the reason people wan't to know what genre something is, is that it helps them find other stuff similar to it. So we can take a song by Madeon or Televisor and say "let's call it Nu-Disco" so that whenever someone googles Nu-Disco they get a bunch of similar songs. I agree genres are a pretty loosely defined a lot of the time, but it helps people expand (or limit if they want) their musical palette.

Dude, he asked what genre was. I gave him my best estimation. I already clarified that people break genre rules all the time. I don't really care what genre something is I was just trying to answer his question.

Well like everyone keeps saying it's hard to give a concrete definition of a genre, so I'll give you a list of songs and artist:

Doesn't matter how many BPM "beats per minute" there are, As long as its computer generated its categorized as electronic or known as dubstep, unless its an acoustic based computer software

Actually I might be totally off but it could be considered Glitch Hop. Dubstep House and Electro are actually around the same bpm (120-130), the difference is that House has a 4 on the floor (bom-ts-bm-ts-bom-ts) beat. While Dubstep has a more off beat (bom--bom-ts) Electro is just a mix of dubstep and House (with complextro being a more complicated instrumentation of electro). ANYWAYS.... this track starts out like House, but then it feels like the beat drops downto 110 in the middle->GlitchHop

I don't think this is even dubstep, though. It's a bit closer to Chillstep or Liquidstep, as previously stated.

Oh yeah, I totally agree with you. I mean genre's are sort of useful, but this obsession with categorizing everything is sort of silly. Especially when people start a flame war over what genre something is (which happens retardedly often) Although I have to say dubstep being at 280 bpm sounds pretty shady to me (maybe they where thinking of drumstep?), and half of 280 bpm is 140 so people might put thier DAW at 280bpm for precision purposes, but the song is actually 140 still.
