One thing I haven’t heard you talk about is brakes. For a car over 2000 lbs. (if I remember correctly) 49 of the fifty states require that the tow dolly has brakes, either electric brakes controlled be a brake controller in the tow vehicle, or surge brakes which brake the dolly hydraulically when the tow vehicle slows down and forces the loaded dolly to move forward on the chassis to apply the hydraulic brakes. When I mentioned this to the woman at U-Haul she looked at me like a deer in headlights. I ended up buying a used CarTow Dolly which was cheaper than renting the U-Haul dolly for the two week trip we were planning. The CarTow Dolly has disc surge brakes and is relatively light weight. The other thing you failed to mention is that due to their short length it is just about impossible to back them up unless everything is in a straight line. So if you are hauling with a dolly you need to be able to turn around in a forward direction, otherwise you have to unhook everything.

I rented a car carrier not the tow dolly from U-Haul to haul a 1500 Chevy truck. After making the straps tight and secure l checked them after driving a bit, just like they say to do. The chain that came with it was to small to reach the frame of the truck so l went and spent 30 dollars on that. Well after getting on the road it started pouring rain. And about 11 pm when l stopped for the night low and behold both straps were off my tires. I was lucky my truck didn't come off with all the bumps, it scared me silly. I was fortunate enough to get them both back on. But again they both came off. I was wondering if you ever had that issue?

MANY TIMES U-Haul will not let you rent their tow Dolly if the vehicle you're towing it's too heavy or big. Or if the vehicle you're using to tow with is not what they prefer you use. AND THAT'S A FACT

how would you load a rear wheel drive automatic transmission

What about the thing about having to disconnect the driveshaft on the automatic vehicles? I heard it can mess transmission up if you just try to tow it without some kind of disconnect happening. If it’s front wheel drive that’s obviously not an issue but if it’s rear wheel drive? Can you anchor the rear wheels on the dolly instead?
