After looking for a budgie to adopt (and there weren't any - and we were not able to adopt a larger bird since we had a young child in the house), we purchased Disco from a local and very reputable bird speciality store (so, not a large generic pet store) who breeds his own birds or (in the case of budgies) gets birds from local, small, reputable breeders. Disco is mostly a standard budgie - but his vet thinks he may have a little English budgie in his background because of his size.

Disco wants to be right on top of us when we're talking to him, too - and that is one reason he mimics my asthma breathiness (he can hear it REALLY well being right up on my face!). It's obvious he enjoys listening to us (and we like talking to him, so that works out well, doesn't it?), but my husband and I also suspect that the lower tones may vibrate his little bones, which may act like a full-body massage! :)
