It's an option and a totally cool fade, but be aware - if you have a melody that takes 32 beats, you're not doing it justice by cutting it up early with fader just because your new track has a killer riff. you gotta let it sound fully at least once before using FX heavily, even if you are imitating FX with the faders.
Another point I'd want you to consider is the fact that you're mixing together two tracks that are rather heavy in mids and highs at the moment of mix, that gets tiring on the ears and generally feels "messy".

If I were you, I would start with new track at 6, filtered on high so that you can only hear the rhythm of that riff coming in, bass cut off, and then as the old melody plays off I would filter it out on lows (12 to 9:30) while the new track goes with filters from 2:30 o'clock to 12. 16 beats before the new drop, simultaneously cut the bass on old track, and on new track set bass to 9 and keep steadily adding.

Mixing like that you get smoother and your mix is more colorful as it feels more like "one track with multiple personalities".
