For decades, if not century, the Dutch East India Company ruled over the global trade.

They gave rise to capitalism, mercantilism, became the first company to get listed on the stock market.

In fact, they were the reason stock markets were created!

(VOC is the abbreviation of the Dutch translation of the Dutch East India company)

Not a bad video, I've seen much worse on the VOC, but not entirely correct either:
- The Ducht were the first modern capitalists, not mercantilists, they wanted the open free seas because they could outcompete all the much bigger European powers. The monopoly of the VOC was the exception.
- The stock company and stock exchange was just one of several financial innovations making modern capitalism. The VOC started as a nationalistic war entreprise, with very ordinary Dutch people buying shares. The VOC saw much more possibilities and grew far bigger than initially intended, so it wanted to reinvest instead of paying dividends, but the modest investors couldn't wait 30 years on ROI, so the stock exchange was founded to let them have their ROI.
- The monopoly was only east of the Cape (South Africa), the far bigger European trade was done by individual merchants. The Dutch did more than half of all European trade and that was far bigger. To the Dutch economy the VOC was rather insignificant because of the long journeys, culturally it was important but the big money was in the regular European shipping of far less exciting products. Quite soon the VOC did more trade within Asia than shipping to Europe.
- The Dutch Republic had a lot of inustry too. Cloth, silverware, weapons, it printed more than half of Europe's books, and painting was also quite an industry as ordinary Dutch people were rich enough to buy paintings, not Rembrandts, but cheaper painters came in great numbers.
So because it was united it was big and looked far more important economically than it was. Shipping wood from Scandinavia, wheat from Poland, fur from Russia, Beer from Germany week in week out was what made the Dutch filthy rich. The VOC just opened a world to them.
But still, good work.

Will there ever be an equal or even bigger company money wise in the future? Maybe.
But I do not see the rise of a company in the future who also is (semi) independant almost sovereing unto itself, make their own laws, conqeuring/colonizing territory (fort/citybuilding), has a standing army/navy and the ability to go to war to get what they want.
No, I sincerely hope that such a company never rises again.
