As a former inmate I can tell you that if a C/O does his or her job correctly there really is no hiding spot. The inmate is screwed. What inmates look for is a C/O who is lazy or "cool" In Missouri every cell had to have a random search twice a month. Once by day shift and once by evening shift.What many inmates would do is catch a "cool" C/O making rounds and ask them to do a random cell search. The main reason is so we wont have our cell tore up. One C/O even told me and my celly the next time to have something on the desk he could take Next thing I want to mention is searches by the E-Squad .I believe in some states they are called CERT. Anyway they are usually done once a year and the whole prison is locked down until they are done. Thing is we usually know they are coming. One people in food service will come back and tell us they made a bunch of sack lunches for the next day. Or in some cases a "cool" C/O will let a couple inmates know. They funny thing is some C/Os will do this as a joke just so inmates will get rid of their contraband and be mad when E-Squad doesnt show. Anyway just thought I would add my 2 cents

Great video on searches. Another tip is to know what they are allowed and what they are not.
Check to clothing matrix for allowed clothing and also jewelry. Their personal item are required to have their DOC engraved. Lastly, confiscate all state items.
