The two Saints with the Name: Bahinabai
Two different female Saints with the name, Bahinabai, both known for their contributions to Marathi literature and the Bhakti movement, but they lived in different centuries.
The first Saint Bahinabai known for her devotional poetry and living in the 17th century, was from Dehu, Maharashtra. She was the wife of Chokhamela and wrote poetry devoted to Vithoba.
The other Saint Bahinabai lived in the 19th century. She was Bahinabai Chaudhari, also known as Yamunabai Waikar. She was born in 1880 in Jalgaon, Maharashtra, and was a notable poetess of the Varhadi dialect. Her poetry reflected the struggles of rural life, the plight of women, and social issues of her time. She, too, made significant contributions to Marathi literature, but her style and themes were distinct from those of the earlier Bahinabai.
Both Bahinabais have left an indelible mark on Marathi literature and continue to be celebrated for their unique contributions to poetry and spirituality in Maharashtra.
About the teacher:
Swami Paranthapa - When he was a teenager Swami’s quest for answers began. He was filled with questions that were always burning inside him. He devoured books on spirituality, mythology, philosophy, and poetry trying to quench his thirst. He wanted an explanation to the questions of why are we here and what is the point of life.
When Swami was 24 he met his Guru. He describes it as “a full moon effortlessly shining his Love on everybody in exactly the same way, holding every person in exactly the same way”. He never knew it then, but now he knows that the Guru was continuously magnetising him to himself-‐ there was no other way it could have been. Finding his Guru was the beginning of comprehending the surety of Home.
