This is totally not understandable. You don't explain things in details. Only do this and do that. And that's it.

Very helpful, this is the only practical QvR tutorial on YouTube - others only show how to get the goods after a Philidor Position is reached. Totally pointless if that position can't be reached. Thanks Derek.

Hi, Derek! Yes, I used your titanic work on this kind of endgame and popularized it for Russian-speakers! I must say that I was very impressed with your videos and especially your database! Your ideas are very useful, for example, I studied your videos during one day - and as a result now I am able to break the computer in this endgame! Best wishes to you from Ukraine and Happy New Year!)))

Hi Derek, thanks for your work and uploading this video series. Others show only the Philidor position (which, for the uninitiated is certainly hard enough to solve), but you are going the whole route and showing how to reach that. Very helpful!

I'm trying to learn this but it is much harder than I imagined. Whenever I setup a position against the computer, it is able to defend with the rook. I can never seem to even find a way to force the king to the edge of the board, not to mention the corner. Most "lessons" in this method start off with the ASSUMPTION that the Philidor position can be forced. Sure, just force the opposing king into the corner. Easier said than done!

Even when the rook separates from the king, I can never seem to find the right sequence of moves to fork it. Oftentimes, the rook hides along the same diagonal that my king is on making it nearly impossible to fork as my own king gets in the way.

Whenever I play against a chess engine, where I have the king and rook, the computer always finds a method but it does so in a seemingly random way, using queen moves that don't seem to have any pattern and that I don't think a human could figure out.

I think I'm going to give up on this and resign myself to the following:
1) This situation will probably never happen.
2) I will know that I have to stray away from this type of ending if I have the queen.
3) I can be confident that my opponent will not be able to figure it out if I have the rook.

It's 2/15/2022 and I had some work to do so I decided to watch some chess videos. This is very, very helpful. I agree with the other commenters here. Too many videos start with Philidor position and this explains how to get there. And it's not so specific that you have to memorize positions. You continually give the reason WHY you are doing something which helps others learn for themselves. Question for anyone. Ay about 5:09 he says something like "close up the position". It's sounds like "erba". Does anyone know what that is?

Thanks so much for taking your time to make this video.

"how would white play the wedge position" if black king was on edges of the board with black to move?

I thought I loved chess but after discovering this position I now hate chess.
