I chose Kit 5 in Quartersawn White oak.

I made my dining room table a few years ago and it was about time to make the chairs, but I really do not like to make chairs! then Matt Cremona came out with the chair kits and the Chair kit #5 was exactly what I would want for the table.

It’s so nice to see a “youtuber” that keeps the craft real….not everyone has 400 hours to make ten 🙂

Beautiful, beautiful chair! Can’t wait to see all 10 completed and around your table. I don’t envy the amount of tedious work in front of you, but it will be worth the effort! Good luck, James!

Wow. I am excited. We have a slab table and I have been wondering what to use for chairs. These look WONDERFUL. I have seen Matt’s chairs but have wondered how they are to put together. This answers my questions. Thanks.

So, interesting and wonderful thing about hot hide glue that surprisingly few people know, is that you can get whatever open time you want – it’s fully customizable. Straight HHG has an open time of about 5 minutes more or less. But you can change that and get an open time longer than any of the typical PVA glues. You just need ordinary table salt. You can add up to 11% salt by weight to hot hide glue and you will not degrade the strength at all (for 192 strength). So, for example, if you have 100g of HHG in your pot/jar you can then add 11g of salt. That will give you an open time of at least 30 minutes bare minimum. I do this all the time with my hide glue. If I just need a little extra time for some insurance, I might just add a few per cent of salt. If it’s a really complicated glue up I’ll go full tilt. I do this so often that I have the weight of my glue jar written on it so that at any moment I can figure out how much glue I have and modify the open time with salt. You can just add it right in at any time. So if you have a glue up that requires some easy sub-assemblies you can do those without any salt so they are ready to handle quickly, then add your salt and proceed with the rest of the complicated glue up. As a fringe benefit, I can leave leftover unsalted HHG in the fridge for a month, but I can leave the fully salted stuff for… I don’t know how long because it’s never gotten funky on me and I once left it in the fridge for 3 months. While 30 minutes might not be as long as epoxy, you can be super messy with it because it won’t affect the finish so just slather it on and wipe up the drips – it’s a considerably faster application.

I kinda think all the videos you produce are just long walks for the final joke at the love it

Holly crap!! These r awesome but at $300 each, I think I’ll just keep fixing up old chairs lol. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying they are not worth it but wow, thats a lot of money. Great video as always James!

How does that yellow brace work? I don't understand as you didn't spin, or swing, or crank anything?!

Watching you chamber all those small pieces confirms y intention not to do chairs until I make a shave horse.

I was surprised ya didnt carve the upright on the back or the cross piece in the to my eyes it is "missing" somethin around that area; some pierced fretwork or carving would look well in there 😁
I've never made a chair, I have made 2 and I know enough from making them that I NEVER want to build a chair 🤷‍♂️😂
These will look very "at home" around your table James, I think I could hear it in your voice at one stage how happy you were with it 😁🤙
