The International Monetary Fund has warned that the Maldives is at a "high risk" of debt problems amid its increasing reliance on China. Maldives owed 42% of its 3 billion dollars in foreign debt to China in 2021. Since Mohamed Muizzu became the President last year, Beijing has pledged even more funding for the island nation.
