I finished reading your book in two days. I loved it! Even though I have been teaching for 23 years, I still found it very relatable. Thank you Michelle for your book and videos!

This was amazing. Even though I already read the introduction, it was an entirely different experience hearing it in your voice! As you know, I am 25 years into my teaching career and I will NEVER forget the struggles of that first year. Honestly, I don't even know how I still have a job! I can't wait to really delve into this book. The only reason I haven't finished it yet is because I haven't been able to keep my eyes open this week past 9pm! It was a full moon after all. IYKYK! I am SO incredibly excited for your virtual book launch today and I promise that as soon as I finish your book I will be leaving you a review! Congratulations on this incredible accomplishment.

Michelle, it was wonderful hearing you read your book while I followed along. I am enjoying the book so much because of the detailed insights into your past experiences and your strategies for navigating life as a teacher. What always fascinated me when I was a first year teacher was that everyone has to start somewhere, and that includes teachers. Although society, and some students' family members feel differently, there is nothing wrong with being new to a profession. In fact, new teachers are in such an exciting, crazy, and surreal time period in their career. It is a time to feel proud of, regardless of any mistakes and mishaps. The challenges and triumphs from your own career have helped mold you into who you are today and inspired you to support other teachers. You have also left a legacy with all your students and their families. And now, you have a beautiful book that encompasses both of those aspects. What an accomplishment to be proud of! 💜

Michelle, I have really come to appreciate and look forward to any videos you do. I have been working as a substitute teacher since 2017. From 2019 through last school year, I was my buildings staff building sub. This year I have been working as a special education paraprofessional. While completing a teaching licensure program, I will student teach this fall… I feel extremely ready, but still nervous. I will definitely be checking out your book.

I read the introduction last night! I could hear your voice in my head! You are not the first teacher to do something like that on your first day of your first job. We all have to go through those moments to get to where you are now!

I am an adjunct instructor at a few colleges. I have had lots of weird experiences.

I have had dogs randomly show up in my classroom two times (at 2 different colleges).

One of my first days involved me showing up to my classroom and finding someone else in the front of the room talking to my class as if they were the teacher, I double checked my schedule, and informed them that they were in the wrong room.

This semester I showed up to my classroom expecting a large white board at the front of the room (since that was what the classroom was like in the past) only to find that they changed it into a smart room (a huge tv monitor attached to the wall through the white board that was in the classroom). I had to change my lesson with zero minutes to spare and I found a power point for my textbook online to supplement the class even though power points are not always the best for a college math class.

I have learned that there will always be unexpected moments in a classroom and that you need to expect the unexpected.

Loved the book! I feel you in your introduction every bit. I can understand both sides (student and teacher). I was a teacher’s kid in the same district that my dad taught in and judgement was made about me before I even stepped into the classroom. I know people talk and I agree with what you have said in the past about students having a clean slate. I always had anxiety on the first day because I didn’t know how my teacher would react to having me in their class. The only teacher during my elementary days who didn’t care about that fact was my fourth grade teacher. She was the absolute best teacher I had until I hit middle school.

Hi Michelle! Here in Bærum, where I live and have gone to school, the school ensures that newly qualified teachers are put in teams with 2 or 3 teachers who have worked for a while as a teacher and at the school in question and you can always lean on them if you need help and you are followed up weekly by the principal and head of department for the first 4 weeks at work and if they see that you need help, they put an extra teacher in your class so that you share the responsibility and if you have students with special needs, that's it put in its own special education teacher and assistant who take care of that student and take him out for 1 to 1 teaching. Should a teacher experience and get a student who acts out and disrupts the class and alerts the management, it doesn't take long before they put measures in place in the form of their own assistant and a specially trained pedagogue or teacher who helps! They also make sure that the teacher they get in 1st grade follows them to 4th grade so that it is stable for them.
