It looks more to me like an element on the lens was flipped, rather than fungus which is more generally hazy and low contrast. When you flip an element in the lens you get those weird double image distortions and ghosting effects.

This must sound really stupid, but I actually like the photographs. Because there are no signs of modernity in the images, the fungus seems to have created an effect like they were taken in the early days of photography, say 1850-70 (ish).

Not sure. It looks more like some sort of deformity in the lens to me.

I hear for the first time about the problem of fungus on the lens. But I think that my Voigländer Brilliant is overgrown by it. At first I thought it was a very nasty dirt stain, but I couldn't explain how it could get between two lenses. How do they develop or can such fungi on the lens be prevented?
