Why Python 3? Python 2 vs Python 3

This video covers why one is encouraged to try Python 3. This is whether you are a complete noob to Python and programming, or if you are a Python veteran that just sees no reason to ever budge from Python 2.

Choosing a version of python can be hard, especially as a noob, since you wish to have the proper support and documentation to learn. Python 2, however, seems to be a sort of "rut" that people, myself included, easily get stuck in. Hopefully we can change that and help the Python language move forward.

My winning argument for Python 3 is the 'native' Unicode support for strings, I am a translator, and use Python for small but important (for me) tasks, and not having to worry about encoding conversion is a great relief.

I'm taking my first ever computer science class, and these videos have helped me advance my use of Python outside of class. Because of learning how to use python, I'm getting very close to changing to a software engineering major and I want to say thank you for making it exciting and fun to learn this language.

I love your videos; honestly they got me into python and I found myself actually committing to the language rather than flipping between trying to learn python and programming in Java

The official end-of-life date for the Python 2 series is 2020 which means you have three years of support from the community. After that, you'll have to find ways to get support for this series as new vulnerabilities can always arise. Since 2.7.13 is expected to be the last major release in the 2.7 series, new features won’t be backported, and only security and bug fixes will be going in from now until 2020. (ActiveState will continue to support the Python 2 series for a very long time, but new language features will be only available in Python 3.)

Off topic but couldn't find a better place to post. Set up a poll for beginner resources in a FB group. You're number one. ;) Gratz

OK, I'm a total noob but here's what I'm taking away from this. The question should be "I want to <insert your reason for learning Python here>, which should I learn?" It would appear if you want to get a job coding in python you should probably go with 2 because of the low industry adoption rate. I would also think in that case it might be best to start learning 3 eventually, probably sooner rather than later. If the company decides to make the switch to 3 you might have a leg on your more experienced co-workers if you're already py3 experienced, might even wind up in a project management position overseeing the transition, over more experienced py2 coders. If you're a hobbyist or learning python to learn the basic concepts of programming before tackling something like C than why not just go with 3?

As for the attitude of Python has to fix 3 and until then I'm not budging, it doesn't make sense, but then as stated I'm a total noob so I may be missing something. Python, I thought was an open source community developed and supported language, so if you're using it you're part of the community and maybe could spend some of the energy wasted complaining about that library that wasn't converted by actually converting library files. If it was Visual Basic then absolutely complain about Microsoft dragging their heels or complain about Oracle slowing a JAVA release if you want, they own the languages and are responsible for their upkeep. If you are actually making money coding in python, if python is helping keep a roof over your head and food on your table than you should be first inline to offer a hand and volunteer some time to the community on whose back you're making your making your living from. At the very least if you learned py3 and contributed you would probably avoid the scenario above and not wind up working for some kid because he learned py3 and you didn't. If you can't be bothered to contribute any time then I'm sure they'd gladly take some of that cash you made using Python.

I'm from the future. Python3 is supported really well now. However, sometimes, I still have to read Python2 docs and hope it'll work for Python3 as well
