The DARK Connection Between The Digital Circus and I Have No Mouth And Must Scream

Did you know this in The Amazing Digital Circus?

The digital circus is actually based on a well known book, and i think this could hint at how the show will end. Let me explain.

So in the past gooseworx has said that the show is directly inspired from I Have No Mouth & I Must Scream, she even mentioned it when pitching the concept to glitch.

I have no mouth and i must scream is a 1967 post-apocalyptic science fiction short story by Harlan Ellison. In that book, 5 humans are tormented by a sentient ai for 109 years. After going through various trials, the group figures out the only way to escape is to kill eachother. They all die except ted the narrator, because the ai turns him into a green jelly with no mouth. He’s left trapped for all eternity, unable to scream.

As you can tell the similarities to the digital circus are pretty clear. except in this case caine doesn’t realise he’s actually inflicting harm upon the trapped humans.

Perhaps in the circus abstracting is like dying. It could be the key to escaping. Only when all the humans have abstracted can the game end. However there’s a chance someone like pomni could end up trapped in the game with caine forever, just like in the book.

I feel like the metaphors and implications surrounding abstraction feel like it's almost akin to a suicide. It's already been compared to death with the funeral they held, but there are other factors like the worsening mental state with an obsession for an "exit" and the fact that Zooble specifically phrases it as Kaufmo "giving up" a phrase often callously used against people who commit suicide.

Alright, if someone gets trapped, I hope it is Jax. It is the one that would make the most sense to get left behind seeing that his character is meant to be hated

I didn't know that but I love 'I have no mouth and I must scream'. It's one of my favourite books/video games. The idea that there could be such a deep connection with the Digital Circus is fascinating. 🎭

But I don't think they will kill one another. It'll probably be something else.

My theory is that the cast actually DOES escape, but finds that the world they escaped to is dystopian and cruel in an ironic twist of fate

There's a song by KittenSneeze called ABSTRACTION and one of the lyrics is "I cannot eat I cannot sleep, I have a mouth but I can't scream". So I guess it's no coincidence, it's just really smart

I think the reason why Pomni had that breakdown in the first episode is because she realized that she knows the ending of that book and is screwed either way

i love how these shows could have very dark backstory and lore and have bright visuals that children love to see, at the same time

The reason Gooseworx cannot make a “I have No Mouth And I Must Scream” movie is that according to the author he is the only person who can express AM properly, which is why he voices AM in the video game. Too bad he’s dead or else we might have had that movie.
