Medical Laboratory Science

Our department offers an accrediated program leading to a Bachelor of Science degree (BS) in Medical Laboratory Science.

The MLS Program consists of four years of study. The first two years or Pre-MLS phase include your general education courses and supporting courses in chemistry and biological sciences. The third year or Upper Division phase begins your major requirements for MLS, with classes in hematology, clinical chemistry, immunology & serology, body fluid analysis, and microbiology & immunohematology (blood banking). The fourth year, the MLS student completes a 20-week practicum rotation ("clinicals") in a hospital laboratory affiliated with the program. Graduates of the program are eligible to take a national certification examination ("boards") for Medical Laboratory Scientist.​

Been in the laboratory profession for 19 yrs now. Thanks to the grace of God. Great profession great job opportunity. The only thing I wish the pay was better. It took me a while to get where I'm at in pay. This is how my career started
1st went back to school got my GED
2nd Enrolled in this vocational school for a 1yr program for a Clinical Laboratory Technician and passed my certification
3rd went to college got my Associate's degree in Biology
4th worked as a laboratory supervisor for 5years in High-Complexity testing
5th Passed my Medical Technologist exam with AAB
Now getting my Bachelor's degree in Biology to a technical Consultant

I was hoping someone can help me out by answering my question. I am finishing up my bachelors degree at a cal state in biology & a minor in microbiology, I initially started as a pre-med but most recently decided that was not the career for me. Since then I’ve been interested in becoming an MLS. Will I have to enroll in a whole new program to achieve that goal or is it possible to apply for a post-bacc program to complete any of the remaining pre reqs I may need? Or will I be qualified to take a board examination since I took a lot of medical related courses as an undergrad? Thank you to anyone who answers in advance!
