Small Details You Missed In The Midnight Sky | Netflix

George Clooney's The Midnight Sky is filled with stunning images of outer space, intense scenes of survival against the elements, and many statements about the human condition. The movie follows two sets of characters amid their perilous and isolated journeys. And while they might be separated by a great distance, Clooney's Augustine and Felicity Jones' Sully have a lot more in common than either of them knows.

As their stories become intertwined throughout the movie, there are a lot of subtle details that you may have missed. Beware, spoilers ahead!

In the beginning of The Midnight Sky, after Augustine has been voluntarily left behind by the evacuating researchers, he proceeds to clean out the belongings of those who left and throws away a small statue of a wolf. If you read the book on which the film is based, Lily Brooks-Dalton's Good Morning, Midnight, you might recognize the significance of that figurine as it's something of a nod to a key scene from the book. In the novel, Augustine has several memorable encounters with arctic animals, including one in which a white wolf approaches Iris.

Augustine kills the animal to protect Iris, but she's actually very upset by this. That's because she read a field guide that indicates arctic wolves may not be aggressive to humans since they don't fear them. In a later scene from The Midnight Sky, Iris can be seen cuddling a stuffed dog, which is another nod to her compassion for the wolf.

I liked this movie and was entertained by the story. When I watch movies I do one thing. Completely dismiss all reality and become immersed into the story.

That statue is Anubis, clearly. He has a jackal head, not a wolf's. This is a meaningful detail that people like yourself may have missed.

Something I admired is that in one of his interviews he commented on how people undercovered can’t see or communicate with their loved ones like they’d wish during Covid - the speechless girl drives that home

The vibe of this movie is different, it feels like how important is family and friends for each and every individuals.

Augustine is also imaginary because no way in hell can somebody be fully submerged in the arctic ocean and then go for a walk in a blizzard.

I’m embarrassed that you didn’t notice that that incredibly famous figure is not a wolf

This is a story of emotion triumphing over logic. Captain: "We're heading off to reboot the species on another planet, we need all the people we can get for genetic diversity!"
Half the crew: "Nah, man, we're heading home to die! Screw the survival of the human species!"

Also, I didn't get from the movie that Iris was Augustine hallucinating his own daughter; that was a "Sixth Sense" level spoiler!

The only thing that I'm not sure about: When thy show us how they are evacuating the facility, where are they going? Cause at first I thought they were taking a space ship to K-23, but for what I've hear that might not be the case
I know Mitchell's family is on Earth, so I thought that maybe not everyone got to evacuate the planet.

After the movie English credits, there's audio of birds and static noise. It implies the Earth 🌎🌍 has a place where birds and humans may still be living.

I think he was always at the mountain observatory and his experiences were all a dream. There's certainly no way he would survive that plunge into the water and that subsequent hike. The world really was at an end and people were evacuated, but I think he was at the second outpost all along. His chemo infusions were part of the dream or he was taking it at the mountain observatory and it figured into his dream.

What I took away from this film is that, at 69 years of age, I could feel my life slipping by with no chance of getting the time it took to watch it back.

I like that the ship is named Aether. Something that scientist won't admit exist.

I may have missed them because I nodded off! 😊

Was it a *great* movie? No. Did all of the details hold up to scrutiny? No. But I enjoyed it anyway. I think it might be best appreciated by those of us who’ve lived long enough to understand the conflicting, and often overlapping, pulls of passion, curiosity, ambition, dedication, love, family, the need for solitude, and the desire for intimacy. And the pain of regret.

It was actually Tal in the novel that played computer games to stay in connection with his sons. Tal spent most of his free time on the journey back to earth on the console. Ivanov had a daughter and a wife and for most of the book didnt get on well with Tal. Ivanov spent most of his time in his lab away from his crew.

Its entered my top 5 for most boring and pointless films I've suffered in 2020...hopefully there will be better offerings over the next 12 months.
